Welcome to Night Vale
« on: August 18, 2013, 10:35:32 am »
So I've been marathoning the podcast Welcome to Night Vale and am about to finish up this morning. Imagine if Stephen King and Neil Gaiman created a Sims game together, left it running for years, and then made a radio show in the style of Prairie Home Companion. Funny, creepy, imaginative, heartwarming occasionally -- with a positive queer relationship to boot!

Possible triggers though, for the same sorts of things any Lovecraftian fiction would have. Creepiness, paranoia, some violence and gore. But usually told very straight faced and with dry humor.

Anyone else listen to this?
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.
What you have created, no one can tear asunder.

Not yet.  I don't suppose it's available anywhere but iTunes, huh?  Man, I hate iTunes...

You have multiple options for downloading! For example, Libsyn, Feedburner, and Soundcloud.

Night Vale has taken over my life. I love the writing, I love the weather! Mainly I love how well-drawn the characters are, even with some of them having the briefest of occasional mentions. I love perfect, perfect Carlos.
I mostly love the fan community but there has been some wank that just makes me sigh in a disgruntled fashion. (people wanting to cosplay the Apache Tracker????? What?)

It exploded all over my tumblr dash in the past month or two and it sounds *so interesting* but I hate podcasts and audiobooks. I can't listen to them, I get bored and distracted and wander off.

How Lovecraftian is it? I don't usually do podcasts (as I'd rather read than listen), but I might be willing to give it a try if it is Lovecraftian enough. :)

So far there's nothing specifically out of Lovecraft (no Cthulhu or shoggoths for example), but there's a very similar feel with the things going on in Night Vale -- mysterious cults running the town, beings of unimaginable power and malevolence wandering the streets as normal folks, angels who are really quite terrifying, sentient atmospheric conditions (all hail the mighty glow cloud!), and a general sense of paranoia and terror in the face of an uncaring universe. So it feels very similar to Lovecraft's world.

But of course, the humor comes from Cecil narrating all of this completely deadpan, as though it's just another normal day.

I've got all the episodes downloaded on iTunes. Just waiting for a time for me and J to sit down and start listening, because like Juni says it has exploded all over Tumblr in the last couple of months and it looks really interesting. :)

What a shame! I love this series so much I would recommend trying the first episode anyway (since I usually can't do podcasts either, but this one really grabbed me and felt easy to comprehend compared to others). It's also fabulous for the following reasons:

  • The main relationship (which evolves slowly and naturally) is a positive queer one without making either character ~*~gay~*~ as a defining characteristic
  • The love interest is canonically described as a PoC - and since most other character aren't described, many fans (like myself) are creating them as PoCs too
  • Cecil routinely goes on rants about native appropriation, which make me laugh and also feel really warm and fuzzy inside
  • There are about as many named women as men, when the characters are human and sentient enough for a gender
  • There is a floating cat in the radio station bathroom (this is not a social justice issue but it's awesome anyway)

I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.

Me too, I tend to just rip stuff to the Amazon cloud and stream from there. I do use iTunes for podcasts and ripping the odd CD though.

I'll check this out, I'm a big fan of audio books and htis sounds like my kinda deal.

It occurred to me late last night that background music helps me focus, so I'm going to try playing some low volume instrumental music while I listen to the podcast. I've just got to find something that won't take away from the mood, which means downloading something new (somehow I doubt Lunasa and Kila are going to go well with WtNV.)

I started listening to this yesterday. I've now heard ten of them. It's brilliant and I love it. Unbelievably weird.

I've only just started listening to it too - think I'm about 7 episodes in.

I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I've grown very attached to this series!

I hate podcasts.

They drive me nuts.

But I love Welcome to Night Vale so, so much. I've been trying to get everyone I know to listen to it.

I'm currently on episode 13.

Guess who's the sexiest specimen of Salvia officianalis on these boards and is going to a live Night Vale show next month in Nashville? :D:
