The Real Robin Hood: History Channel Documentary

I'm watching this right now and I'm thoroughly engrossed. Once again, I do not know enough about the history of the stories/mythologies and the region in question to attest to the accuracy, but the discussion of the characters and what they represent is pretty darn interesting.

I thought it was a good survey of the possibilities of the truth of Robin Hood.

Well...

First of all, this seems to have been made to tie into a movie (and features the movie's director and leading actors as "experts") so the bar is already set pretty low.

The part near the end that tells the history of Maid Marion's character (starting out as a figure independent from the Robin Hood story and becoming fully incorporated in the Victorian Era) is fairly accurate.

The history regarding Richard the Lionheart and King John is accurate as well.  Pity that A Gest of Robyn Hode (one of the oldest surviving Robin Hood stories) names the king as "Edward."

Movie could have been better.  I'm a fan of Ridley Scott's work, and he had a great cast.  But...  
I just wish someone would adapt Lawhead's King Raven trilogy for the screen.  Until then there's Disney's cute talking fox.

I recall reading somewhere that the earliest legends had Robin Hood as a rather uncouth and brutish highwayman... quite different from the knavish do-gooder we know today.  No idea when that changed though.

I think that's the case as well.

I remember Tony Robinson doing a much better documentary tracking the origins of the Robin Hood stories.  Sadly, it seems the video has been taken down from youtube.
