2019 Donation Drive

It's time for our annual Server Donation Drive! We need to raise at least $650 (same as last year) to keep The Cauldron's server online for another year. Please help! Either hit that Paypal button to the right and make a one-time donation in any amount or set up a monthly Bronze, Silver or Gold Donor subscription. You can find more info in this message!

Donations as of 13 Sept 2019: $656 donated. $6 more our minimum goal! Let's beat last year's total of $99 more than the minimum!

Note: This total is updated manually, usually once a day

* "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" Problem Logging In?

If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

help me find this Shiva song!
« on: November 04, 2014, 08:47:40 pm »
A few years ago, I took a dance class and the instructor used this particular song for the warm-up - very Hindu, or at least Hindu-esque. I remember having a discussion about this song once and why she chose it, because it referenced Shiva several times, as he is the Lord of the Cosmic Dance.

Naturally, years later, it is driving me nuts that I can't find this particular song anywhere! It couldn't have been longer than five minutes and was most likely about four minutes in length, max. If I heard it, I'd recognize it instantly but being focused on the warm-up itself, I don't remember any particular lyrics beyond it's references to Shiva.

Any Cauldronites feel up to the challenge of helping me recognize a long-lost earworm? :)

There are many, many songs (bhajans, devotional songs) to Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Shiva is no exception. I dare say there are hundreds. The best I can suggest is this Youtube search https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=nataraja+ and sample each one.

I might add that the dance Shiva does is for a very specific purpose and is a very specific type of dance, called Tāṇḍava (the first 'a' is 'ah' as in 'father). It is one form of the dance he does when he is destroying the old and worn out, to make ready for new creations. Think of a star being destroyed by supernova, then new stars forming from its remnants. That is Shiva at work.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help in pinpointing the song.
śivāya vishnu rūpaya śivaḥ rūpaya vishnave
śivasya hridayam viṣṇur viṣṇoscha hridayam śivaḥ
Vishnu's appearance is Shiva; Shiva's appearance is Vishnu
Vishnu is the heart of Shiva; Shiva is the heart of Vishnu - Skandopanishad

First, that description of Shiva's dance is beautiful.

Second - yeah. That's kind of what I'm at: google searching anything that might come up as a possibility.

If it helps narrow the parameters any, this didn't sound at all like a traditional song. It was Loreena McKennitt similar-sounding (and possibly WAS one of her songs, she did like her music).

Would it be a group more like Vas or Shiva in Exile or something like that?
