Netflix 2.0 & Qwikster
« on: September 19, 2011, 03:48:11 am »
Interesting, I just got a form email from the PTB at Netflix. Evidently they're going to maintain the price change and split DVDs into a completely separate imprint entitled 'Qwikster' that will also offered video games (for consoles at least), they say there will be no additional price increase but note that the 'upgrade' to games will be similar to the BD upgrade option - which, IIRC is an additional $2 a month. After the changeover the name Netflix will refer exclusively to the streaming content. The Qwikster and Netflix sites will not be integrated and users will receive separate billing.

Personally I tried Gamefly which does console games through the mail as well but they charged, I think $15 - $20 a month at the time, and I'm such a casual gamer the price was too high. Also a lot of Redbox kisoks - in this area at least - also offer $1 day video game rentals.

I can understand splitting the services but it makes me wonder how viable netflix-streaming-only will be on its own as Starz is pulling its content in 2012 and other providers like HBO have declared they will never allow their material to be streamed by Netflix.

Thoughts?

My thought on this is that even with the price change Netflix is still cheaper than cable, or dish. As I don't want to pay what cable or dish wants, netflix still gets my money.

As for redbox, I sometimes like to watch older movies from the 1930's. Redbox does not offer anything like that.

The game thing I don't need to worry about I know so many gammers that if I want to play something one of them has a copy of it.

At this point I've dropped using Netflix completely because they don't offer half the stuff for Canadian viewers that they do for American viewers. Most of the popular tv shows are not even available. So... I suppose this doesn't effect me? Nowadays I either download or purchase my movies or tv shows. And video games I just purchase outright, because I rarely buy them and usually go for extra content or special editions.
