Entertainment Weekly gives us a first glimpse at the Giver movie, coming out this August.

Bonus: Maryl Streep plays the Chief Elder.
Extra double plus ungood: Jonas is bumped to 16 years old and his sort-of-flirtations with Fiona in the book becomes "almost a love affair." Because why not.
Maker, though the darkness comes upon me,
I shall embrace the light. I shall weather the storm.
I shall endure.
What you have created, no one can tear asunder.

I have to say I didn't think much of the book, though I loved the next book, Gathering Blue, so much that I hinged my Eng lit dissertation on it. (I love post apocalyptic ad lit).

I probably will see the fim though

But...Twelve.

Sixteen now. Now idea how they're going to handle the pills for the Stirrings. Surely they don't wait until /sixteen/ to try to circumvent puberty.

...does that mean in the books no adults went through puberty but Birthmothers? Or just their sex drives were suppressed? Probably the latter as the Giver has facial hair (thus indicating testosterone did SOMETHING).

More importantly... Does Skarsgard take his clothes off? There is no need for this to happen, but it seems like it happens in literally everything he's ever been in, so I'm curious. For, uh, science.

I read that Lois Lowry was intimately involved in the film, including on how the extras were dressed. (I'm trying to remember *where* I read that so I can link.) I'm not super keen on the age change, or the increased focus on the love interest, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

That's a really good thing to hear. Not all book adaptions are terrible, but I'm just so used to authors getting steamrolled for Hollywood. Fingers crossed.
