Fear the Walking Dead--I'm Done.
« on: September 01, 2015, 11:55:44 am »
#1--I'm a huge fan of the original show, The Walking Dead. It's the only show in the last 5 years that has had me on the edge of my seat, with storytelling so gripping it has left me screaming at my television in rage, horror, relief, despair...or left me jaw-dropped and numb.

#2--I had huge qualms about the new show, Fear the Walking Dead, when it was announced. Oversaturation and brand dilution rarely work out well, neither for the original show nor for its spinoff(s).

#3--Now we've had 2 eps of the spinoff...and this shit is lame-ass boring, with some of the most unlikeable characters since the grown children on Transparent (whom I loathe).

But most of all...

#4--This is the worst case of Expendable Negro Syndrome I've ever seen, and considering the criticism justly leveled at the orig TWD for exactly that, this can only be deliberate. I'm not buying anyone's mealy-mouthed excuses. Of the 3 black characters introduced in the first ep, all 3 were doomed by the second ep.

I don't need to waste another minute watching that kind of crap.

The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Oh, man. :(

I'm well aware of the controversy surrounding the original, but I didn't put two and two together until now. Thanks for pointing it out. (Though I wish you didn't have to.)

That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

You know, what, I'm just going to say it. This isn't by accident. They know what people say about their treatment of black characters, they know there's a #BlackLivesMatter movement, and they still  kill off three black men at the start of the show?

And not just any black men, but a black drug dealer, a black man dating a white woman, and a black man in a position of authority. Those are three very common themes of racial hatred.

Bullshit.

I guess I will not need to wait for the spinoff to show up on Netflix in a year or so. It sounds like a complete waste of time. Yours is just the latest comment trashing it among people I know on and off line. I think the most favorable thing I've heard this week is "I'll give it one more episode, unless it gets a lot better, I'm done."

I wasn't even going to bother watching - I hate spinoffs, generally: they usually end up being crappy. Besides - why do we NEED to know what happened "before" TWD? The "not-knowing" was kind of a BIG PART of why TWD was so scary/unnerving. We didn't know where it came from or what started it. I prefer it that way.
Your comments have just put the proverbial nail in the coffin for that show, for me. Thanks :)

(Insert standard "I don't watch TV" preface here)

Someone told me (after they watched the first episode) that it looked like it was made by someone who didn't want to make a horror show but was somehow forced to.  That combined with what you mentioned has definitely thrown me off of ever considering watching it.
