Favorite music to sing/play
« on: September 14, 2015, 07:15:32 pm »
We've had threads before about favorite music to listen to, but here's something different. What are your favorite songs to perform?

I play the recorder, and I've noticed a big difference in the songs I like to play vs. songs I like to listen to. One reason is that rock and pop music often isn't melodic enough to sound good on a wind instrument; another is my skill level, since I only know the most common keys. So I end up playing a lot of folk songs, and also quite a few hymns. There's some modern stuff in there too, but mostly from game and movie soundtracks.

My current top favorites are probably Ode to Joy, Lord of the Dance, Scarborough Fair, and the trumpet fanfare from Castle in the Sky. And I'm learning to play Sumer Is Ycumen In, which ought to be fun once I get the muscle memory in.

How about you?

My playing of both the piano and the recorder is mediocre at best. My piano skills are very lapsed - I used to be pretty good, but now I can only tinkle a few basic tunes. It's mostly hymns and Christmas carols on the piano for me - the latter because I have to practice all year to be able to play a couple by Christmas. :p I'm a bit better on the recorder and play a few traditional folk songs, a mix of Irish and English. I need to start going to classes on the recorder and penny whistle - I want to get better, and there are folk music classes at the local Irish centre that I could take.

How many christmas songs have you got? Looking at my own sheet music, I have around 30 ... not that I can play all of them, though :P

I only ever had 2 years of formal lessons, when I was about 10, and the best thing I got out of it was how to read musical notation. That gave me the ability to learn a lot on my own ... so, like any other kind of literacy, I suppose. On the other hand, I can't play by ear for the life of me.

I play a number of instruments in mediocre fashion - dulcimer, flute, piano, and recorder - and mostly like folk music, or simple arrangements of classical pieces.  Although, I did manage a passable rendition of "True Colors" by ear on my dulcimer.

I also sing, and my faves there are classical pieces, folk music, and show tunes.  I've been known to burst into Gilbert & Sullivan when the mood strikes me.

Heh.

I was a church chorister for many years and still love sacred choral music. I sometimes go to church just to hear the choirs. I was at a church for my research yesterday with a full sung mass - so beautiful.

I was also a chorister, complete with RSCM medal (our choir master was from the UK).  Sacred choral music still sends shivers up my spine.
