Earworm 'mantras'/'therapy'
« on: February 27, 2020, 06:03:39 pm »
Okay, fair warning, this'll likely be a wee bit tl;dr…

When I get an earworm, I usually end up with a bit of the lyrics replaying on a loop in my brain.  Sometimes, I get concerned that the lyric has a negative message which I'm consequently reinforcing to my subconscious brain in the process.

I read or picked up somewhere that your subconscious believes whatever you tell it, and this is why mantras can be quite helpful and also endeavoring to replace 'negative self-talk' with positive is, or can be, important for maintaining good mental health.  So I replace a bit of the lyric with a more positive version.  Nothing nearly so creative as the likes of Weird Al, but along those lines.

An example:
P!nk's Just Like A Pill lyric = "you're just like a pill, instead of making me better, you keep making me ill".
I have to edit this earworm when it gets it's teeth into my brain, to become = "you're just like a pill, as well as making me better, you keep making me well".
(Doesn't necessarily make that much sense, but you should be able to see what I'm getting at.)

Anyone else do this?  Or something similar?

Yes to the changing of lyrics. Not necesarily when they become an earworm and I hadn't really thought of them as having an effect beyond me.
There are songs I like the tune to but have words which are either negative or just not right. I tend to sing at times when working and I like to have a positive to get me through.

Exactly.

I got an earworm the other day that I couldn't alter the words to, to make it any more positive.  I had to try and shift it altogether instead (a few silent recitals of the entire of Pink Flloyd's On the Turning Away lyrics did the trick, but nothing short of that would work).
