Antidotes to hated Christmas songs, 2019 Edition
« on: November 30, 2019, 11:16:21 pm »
And, as has been repeatedly demonstrated over the years, we can't have a Most Hated Christmas Songs thread without also having a thread for posting the songs you use to drive out the hated-song earworms.

What are your favorite musical antidotes to overplayed Christmas glurge?

I have Eric to thank for inspiring my opening contribution this year:

...really now, how many original Christmas songs (not new takes on old songs) have come out in the past fifty years? And of those which have come out, how many of them are or at least appear to be in the process of becoming 'standards'?
<snip>
Other than that...anyone care to educate me?

... Aw, crap. I just realized this is more than fifty years old now. D'you mind me stretching that by two years, Eric? According to its Wikipedia page, it seems to be more of a 'standard' than I'd thought.

In any event, it's how I'm kicking this thread off. I don't think I'd want to hear it overandoverandover through the season, or use it as my only antidote, but in selecting an instance whose video I liked, I was pleased to find it every bit as charming as I'd remembered.

I don't mind it one bit (I like that song, too!)...but you've just underscored my point!

So, this is one of my favorites (not sure what the origin is...but this is the version I know, and the one I adore).  The reason I think I like it so much is the kinda gory imagery, it's sort of a cheery massacre song to me!

I sort of adore them, and they are now the only holiday music I play at home.  (I used to play this cd I have that is all holiday music but no people, it's all animal noises, it's brilliant...but I kinda need words to my music most of the time, so that one was fun to break out for opening presents....most of the cd you can't tell, but there is at least one section that is blatant, like geese honking or something, I forget)

For a serious mood: The Rebel Jesus, Jackson Browne - .
For a ridiculous mood: Fairytale of New York, The Pogues -

It is still my most important Christmas ritual that I cannot consider it the Christmas season until I’ve heard ‘Fairytale of New York’ on the radio, in the shops or similar (on my own phone doesn’t count). Some years this has led to me having to go out wandering the shops listening to the Christmas music or listening obsessively to my car radio, a few days before the main event, in the hope that I hear it and am allowed to open my presents. I have no idea why this became a thing, but it did.

(not sure what the origin is...but this is the version I know, and the one I adore).

It says 'Fleet Foxes cover', and Wikipedia confirms that it was written by FF's lead singer/songwriter.

(I see from the YouTube sidebar that PTX has covered certain songs mentioned in the 'Most Hated' thread. That's scary.)

Yeah, they've done a lot of Christmas songs...I'm a huge Christmas song dork though, so I love them all (I don't know that I have a most hated lol).  It's that childhood memory thing, Christmas songs just make me happy (and drive hubby up the wall, so I try to binge them when he's gone/sleeping and put on other stuff when he's awake...though I play Christmas music when we open gifts :P)

My emerging tradition: 'It's not really Christmas season until Soph posts "Fairytale of New York" in the "antidotes" thread' :). Not least because I'm always happy to see you posting on TC.

So, now I can put up my itty-bitty tree, for which I have succeeded in acquiring itty-bitty ornaments.

So, bouncing off some comments in the bad christmas songs thread, what is the queerest holiday song people can think of?

I consider this the antidote to one of the worst musical travesties ever created!

I like Jona Lewis, “ Stop the cavalry” .
If I hear too much Christmas songs I don’t like or any other music I don’t want to hear I usually I play “Planet Hell” from Nightwish.

My favourite Christmas song is Carol of the Bells.

I can't articulate why, but it has a pagan-y feel for me...  I'd assumed it was old and was most surprised to learn it's actually quite modern.

Anyway, I really like it.

It's also my favourite!

I'm also very fond of the HP Lovecraft Historical Society version of it, Carol of the Old Ones.

Warning: imagery and/or staring at Cthulhu may cause insanity, but no more than listening to terrible Christmas music on repeat.

I remembered this (I also love the Carol of the Bells), and stumbled across this today:

according to the artist, the song is based on a Ukranian folk chant (that has nothing to do with Christmas lol)...you can read the blip about it in the details part under the song.
