Antidotes to hated Christmas songs, 2017 Edition
« on: December 11, 2017, 07:24:20 pm »
And, as has been repeatedly demonstrated over the years, we can't have a Most Hated Christmas Songs thread without also having a thread for posting the songs you use to drive out the hated-song earworms.

What are your favorite musical antidotes to overplayed Christmas glurge?

Mannheim Steamroller! It's the cheesiest stupidest thing ever, but I'm a sucker for awful synth music, and it hits me right in the nostalgias.

Since I was a teenager obsessed with John Constantine, I've loved "Fairytale of New York," by the Pogues. Warning: this contains some homophobic and misogynist slurs, but I'm still very fond of it as a bittersweet celebration of the holiday.

More recently, I've enjoyed the late Queen song "A Winter's Tale." It's very poignant to me. This isn't technically a Christmas song--just a song celebrating how pretty it looks when winter arrives in a town the narrator loves. But--close enough.

There's a very silly song I love by a kind of obscure but kind of internet famous act called Steam Powered Giraffe. Their gimmick is that they're all musical vaudeville robots. I used to really love their stuff and how silly it was. Haven't listened too much recently, but here's their "Yulemas" show song, of which no good recordings exist.

I love that one! And pretty much the whole album.

I love SPG. They're awesome.

My antidote (and nowhere a new song but new to me) is "What is Christmas?" By Trans Siberian Orchestra. It's the ultimate bah humbug song without being awful.

One of my personal faves is Il Est Ne Le Devin Enfant, especially up-tempo versions:

I quite like anything with a cappella choir, if it's an adult choir (it's all about that bass).

Also, a Silent Monks Hallelujah Chorus is always good for a laugh:

Lyricfox and I love just about all of Trans Siberian Orchestra's Christmas albums. Wonderful music.
