Look what I found
« on: October 31, 2012, 11:17:33 pm »
I found this statue in a small shop today.  There's no name, and I'm not familiar with the work, but I'm assuming that it's Ganymede being carried away by Zeus.

My question is this:  it's cast iron, and as you can see it's in pretty bad shape.  I have the arm and another piece; can I reattach it with super glue, a soldering iron, or something else?  Should I even try?  It's not exactly like 'oh hey, I found the Venus de Milo's arms', but it's not completely dissimilar either.  Either way, I need to do something for the base before it cracks even worse and ends up like the Colossus of Rhodes.

I'd check with people who restore these types of statues for info.

it looks like an Apollo statue to me. (I am going off of pictures my one sister brought back from Greece when she lived there).
Fixing cast iron takes a lot of skill and special welding tools and material. I agree with Randell though and ask around to see exactly how to fix it. For re-attaching the arm a wooden or clay plug might be a better way to go, one side in the arm one side in the shoulder. As for the base, I am not sure. I love fixing old item like this...
