You're not really a pagan if you don't do magic.

Not specifically about magic but I've heard the "Your not a real Pagan because you don't dress like one!"  Especially at pagan events open to the public it seemed.  Seem's if you didn't dress like Lorie Cabot or something similar you just weren't a real Pagan.

Does that work? I would assume saying something like that would scare potential dates away rather than attract them!

No kidding. That's usually the last thing I bring up... although I suspect my girlfriend likes it. She has called me "her pagan" affectionately before. Plus when we met I was wearing a shirt reading "Give me that old time religion" with Stonehenge on it. Maybe it only works on specific sorts of people.

Yeah...This guy has been trying to convert me for years.  I only keep in contact with him because he's a lot of fun to debate with.  lol

What's the craziest thing someone's said about your path?

From my in-laws: "We don't want you exposing our son to your religion!" A religion they had asked me absolutely no questions about, do not know the holidays of, and in fact know jack about.

At the time I responded with, "That's his choice."

If they ever tried it again, I might reply, "I see to it he wears a hazmat suit."

For Paganism in general...I'd say anything that can be found in a Chick tract. :) (My personal favourite is "Dark Dungeons").

For Vanatru, I've heard: "People say they're Vanatru just to get dates." (I've also heard the same thing said about Wiccans, in particular). IMHO, if you've joined a religion, any religion, to get dates, ur doin' it wrong.

Two variations I've gotten:

Caesar was a barbarous murderer, and I'm crazier that a shithouse rat for worshiping him.

Caesar was a barbarous, murdering socialist and that I'm crazier than a shithouse rat for worshiping him.

Socialist. People keep using that word. I don't think it means what they think it means.

Sorry to derail the thread, but I couldn't help but think of Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride.  XD  (I have a feeling you meant that to happen, lol.)

Oh, he knows. He actually wrote a bigass paper on the subject of Caesar's socialism, and currently calls himself a "Caesarean Socialist". Even as he maintains Caesar was a barbarian. Did I neglect to mention he runs one of the largest socialist organization in America?

Oi...I can't STAND hypocrites.  (Obviously, everyone's a bit of a hypocrite, but I'm talking about the super obnoxious hypocrites.)

Dionysos is a party god and people only worship him as an excuse for hedonism.

(...like one needs an excuse for hedonism... *rimshot* )

Or, because I'm a fairly introverted, socially inhibited person, I couldn't possibly really be one of his.  I must be posing.

Maybe he's being exceptionally literal?  Didn't "barbarian" originally mean "anyone who isn't Greek?"  :D:

Well, that's...interesting...I tend to be attracted to deities who embody qualities that I'd like to cultivate in my own life, personally. Most of the time, I'm told, the gods choose us, though, and I don't know of any god or goddess who would be so dim as to not recognize when a human is theirs, no matter their traits.

Since you mentioned Dionysus. I saw a bust of him when I went to the Royal Ontario Museum....*wipes drool away from the corner of her mouth* Whaaaaaaaat? The bust was visually appealing!

I have not heard much about Kemeticism in particular (mostly because I think a lot of US has no idea what it is), although I was highly irritated when the King Tut exhibit came to Denver and some fundies where upset that there was a giant statue to Anubis outside the Denver Airport for awhile, they didn't like an "evil satanic death god" having a statue anywhere in the city....  Granted the statue was labeled "King Tut" which was indeed a bit annoying.

I remember that.  It bothered me a lot.

I'm very thankful that my friends are an open minded bunch and accept my beliefs, and are willing to have serious discussions about such things.  Unfortunately, I've heard other people say "Anubis is the evil god of death" and "Oh, the Egyptian gods and goddesses are all just myths.  They're not actually real, like Jesus.  Everyone who worships them is going to Hell!"  -_-
