religion's greatest aspect
« on: October 11, 2018, 04:28:06 am »
What is religion's greatest aspect?

For me, it's religious tolerance and freedom. To be able to follow one's own religious path. There is nothing more beautiful than the existence of many religions offering a number of alternatives and that we freely choose the alternative we want. There are societies that suppress religious freedom, these kind of societies are evil, in my opinion, they promote hate, intolerance and misery, that's wrong in every possible way. I hope religious tolerance and freedom to be the norm in all societies.  :)

What is religion's greatest aspect?

The connection between man and god and what people choose to do with that connection.

What is religion's greatest aspect?

Truth, righteousness, and justice...softened by mercy, with an intended end result of peace.

What is religion's greatest aspect?

A sense of connectedness to the larger universe and a sense of one's place in that universe.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

What is religion's greatest aspect?

Of course I couldn't narrow it down to just one, though there is a clear theme, so here is my list! :D

  • Acceptance - by a higher power, a community or yourself
  • Connectivity with the universe - we are all the Universe experiencing itself anyways aren't we?
  • Community - Humans are social creatures, maybe we don't all have a thriving In-Person community but places like The Cauldron are enough for me
  • Motivation of the typically selfish individual to contribute to the well-being of others and society - charity work, pay it forward, generally not being a dick, serenity of mind and peace to improve disposition therefore improving how one interacts with others and hopefully improving their day etc. etc. etc.

What is religion's greatest aspect?

Interesting thread this is shaping up to be.

I'm going to say, for me, it's probably the aspiration for inner peace.

Do we think it's in the eye of the beholder, too, though?

It depends. What are the qualities of inner peace?

What is religion's greatest aspect?

It's bound to be different for different people.

For me, it's access to different planes of consciousness -- divine ecstasy, nirvana, deep trance and such.

With the proviso that, as you correctly note, its's different for different people, let me advance this proposal: That it is possible (and worthwhile) to aspire to something higher and better than ourselves.

What is religion's greatest aspect?

That's hard to answer. There's a lot that's good about religion. I would say that the guidance and motivation it gives to it's believers is one of the best qualities. There are other's though; comfort, community, healing, and many other good things can come from religion.
"The worshippers of the gods go to them; to the manes go the ancestor-worshippers; to the Deities who preside over the elements go their worshippers; My devotees come to Me." ... "Whichever devotee desires to adore whatever such Deity with faith, in all such votaries I make that particular faith unshakable. Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna

For me at the moment it's mythology. I love the many different possibilities of interpretation, artwork, storytelling, modern retelling and how the characters of all the different deities show themselves in the stories. I also think the stories are one reason why pagan contents have survived for so long.

Christians use ''mythology'' as fairytails, but they are wrong. Mythology is real all the way!

Oh, I was meaning that religion's greatest aspect is likely in the eye of the beholder.

But the perceived qualities of inner peace are going to vary from person to person, too, I think.

The qualities of inner peace for me are, I'm afraid, a little too difficult for me to articulate right at the moment ...but I'll try to compose something (eventually!) and come back & post it sometime.

Yes, I agree! and this freedom of choice is what makes religion beautiful.  :)
