If you get an "Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again" error when you try to log in, you need to be sure you are accessing the board with a url that starts with "https://ecauldron.com".  If it starts with https://www.ecauldron.com" (or "http://www.ecauldron.com") you will get this error because "www.ecauldron.com" is not technically the same website as "ecauldron.com". Moving to the more secure "https" means it is more picky about such things.

Seconding this.  Hell, one of my protagonists was a rather angsty (but gentle) guy in the first few drafts he appeared in.  Now he's a sociopath with much more interesting things to do than constantly whine.

When I reread the first chapter after finishing the first draft of my one finished novel, I wanted to bury myself alive from the shame - the male chracter was supposed to be some kind genius but never actually showed in actions, the female character had less bite than she was supposed to and whole the frame was off. And the beginning was one thing I rewrote again and again as the novel progressed.
And now I am over the first chapter of a new work and I think all of the chracters minus the protagonist are on the wrong note but... eh, I try remembeing the beginning is just a starting platform.

It's normal for it to be shitty, or shittier than the final version will be anyway.

So resist, Lokabrenna!

I have a confession to make.  I too have suddenly caught the Rapture Writing Bug and have an idea that could work with a storyline I already have in the works.  Although mine isn't really about the Rapture, someone just wants it to look that way.

You don't mind, do you?

I'll skip the writing, but do the reading and do my usual Baen plug. Just started "Queen of Wands" that came out this week.

Main character is a deeply faithful Christian woman who ends up working with a bunch of pagans for the FBI killing demons. Book one was Princess of Wands.

All I ask of people wanting to write rapture-fiction is to please make it better written than Left Behind and the Left Behind imitators.

Everyone can have their own plot bunnies! I don't care! I don't own the copyright on Rapture plots, sadly, or the Left Behind people would so owe me (double, because the antichrist is Romanian and my parents are Romanian, that pissed me off, and Carpathia, really? You named your character after a mountain range? Ugh!)

That's just one of the little literary failures of the series. It had so much potential, but was done so poorly.

I know, right? I had to read the first book for my "religion and popular culture" course in university, and my prof. was like: "Did you at least find it entertaining?" and I was like: "I wanted the antichrist to win so it would all be over."

I hope my story won't be as aggravating.

What about if the villain of the storyline forming in my head read those books and thought they would be a good blueprint to world domination?  Or should I not mention which awful piece of Rapture Fiction (as if there was a shortage?) he got the idea from.

And about the name...I think one reviewer put it best when she said "That's the most obvious villain name since Darkheart Rapesbabies.  And I made that up!"

It depends on which stories sie draws from, I guess. If you wanted to name a specific one, you could always give it some silly knockoff name like they did on The Simpsons (they used "Left Below"). Like, I don't know, "The Rupture" :P

And Nicolae, really? Is that the best you can do? No Romanian dictator was ever named Nicolae! *grumbles*

OTOH, it was too late anyway, since that was kind of what I was alluding anyway.

For all intents and purposes, assume that the kind of pre-tribulation dispensationalist view of the Rapture happens (a la Left Behind). A bunch of Evangelical Christians suddenly disappear (good times, right?). Soon after, the world literally starts going to Hell in a handbasket, then Jesus shows up and is all: "Okay, now that most of you have died from the world going to shit, time for Judgement Day!" Somewhere in there is an epic battle of angels vs. demons.

What do you do?

The reason I ask is I'm thinking of writing a story about the Christian end times through Pagan eyes (kind of a deconstruction of the idea) so I want to make the reactions of the various characters as realistic as possible. So, what do you do? Hide? Fight? Just try to live your life? Do you accept the Mark of the Beast (you need it to conduct business)? Wonder if you've been deluded all this time?

I'm a prepper. Not because rapture. But because of wars and such. So my "lets stock up extra batteries and dried foods" led into full blown prep.   Maybe i am insane. But if Everything goes south. . Me and mine will be good.

I'm so glad it's not just me.

Also, comment to the rest of the thread: Can I just love you guys forever? This thread made my day.

Well, I'd be pretty pissed off at Jesus, for a start. You took THEM??? THOSE PEOPLE I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH WHO MADE ME LOSE MY FAITH IN ORGANIZED RELIGION??? I used to pray to you, Jesus! You never answered me! I just thought you weren't interested in me! WTF Dude???

More seriously, I'd probably try to look after all the abandoned animals those fundamentalists left behind. Seriously. They have pets, and they're not going along. There are a lot of evangelicals in my area, and if they vanished, there'd be a lot of animals needing care. I actually read a story of atheists offering to do something like this. It sounded like trolling to me, but it was a good point they were making.

Strangely enough, due to my long-time affiliation to Christianity (mostly due to an upbringing and further adult exploration) I would probably be raptured and wouldn't have to worry about anything else.

And according to the story, if you take the "mark of the beast", you are forever damned in hell.

So to survive here means to burn forever there.

Yeah. :D:

Hate to point this out, but if I remember correctly from my time in evangelical-land, if you're posting in a place like this, you're probably not rapture-worthy.;)

They were pretty clear that not everybody who called themselves Christian would make it. Just the "true" Christians who fit their narrow definition. No Catholics, likely, because we Catholics (as I was at the time) dismissed the whole lot of end-times prophecy as bunkum. Officially. In fact, the Church branded it as heresy.

I choose not to believe in a heresy. :D: I have that much Catholic left in me.
