For all intents and purposes, assume that the kind of pre-tribulation dispensationalist view of the Rapture happens (a la Left Behind). A bunch of Evangelical Christians suddenly disappear (good times, right?). Soon after, the world literally starts going to Hell in a handbasket, then Jesus shows up and is all: "Okay, now that most of you have died from the world going to shit, time for Judgement Day!" Somewhere in there is an epic battle of angels vs. demons.

What do you do?

The reason I ask is I'm thinking of writing a story about the Christian end times through Pagan eyes (kind of a deconstruction of the idea) so I want to make the reactions of the various characters as realistic as possible. So, what do you do? Hide? Fight? Just try to live your life? Do you accept the Mark of the Beast (you need it to conduct business)? Wonder if you've been deluded all this time?

My husband is a member of a Heathen Emergency group, so if it happened I suppose we'd bug out,  meet up with others, and go off into a remote area and start working on building a secure colony.

Is that what you're looking for?

Nice story idea.  I kind of wish I thought of it.

As for the question at hand, I think I would me more inclined to celebrate.  To be honest, I think life would be a little bit easier without having the Evangelical Stranglehold on Politics.  After that, I would probably join the good guys and accept the Mark.  Because, to be honest, The God That Appears In Rapture Fiction (TM) tends to be evil.

That's exactly what I'm looking for! I was thinking my main character should join up with like-minded folks and form a sort of colony, grow their own food, defend it from hostile forces, perhaps even welcome "refugees" from other religions besides a certain flavour of Evangelical Christianity. Right now I just want some ideas for other characters.

I like to think that I've come to terms with the needling "What if Christianity is completely and totally right and true?" background noise, more thoroughly than, "Well it's equally likely not to be," or just "Well it's not, okay?" By now, if it happened, I wouldn't be surprised. I feel that I've studied enough of the canon to have made my decision, so no wondering about delusions. If I'm cast as a goat in the fire, then I'm a goat in the fire. I'd do what it takes to survive until then, just to see what happens next. I'd like to think that I wouldn't get cutthroat about it, because I've come to really believe that the positive energy exchanged-- caring, support, learning-- in the company of other people, doesn't cost and is never wasted because it's... really, all we have that really matters. Then again, nothing Apocalyptically bad has happened to me, nobody really crossed my path who was so on edge that they'd do anything and I'd regress to my high school, "every life of the mortal human race just isn't worth it!" attitude, so perhaps that value would change.

Through it all, however, I would be mildly disappointed that it wasn't Ragnarok. The Apocalypse is epic, don't get me wrong, it's chock full of magnificent imagery and adventure and narratively poignant human condition so-and-so. It's just, well. Question if the Christians are gone why would Jesus show up? (All Christians are supposed to spread the faith, therefore I consider all of them Evangelical).

Interesting story idea! I would personally check in with my personal pantheon to see where they stand *politically* on and stick to their side of the conflict. And if They are neutral, I seize the chance to go hiking/camping  around the world in the wilderness until it's over (I would bet turism during rapture-time would be very low-cost, but the series never aired inItaly so I wouldn't know for certain).

If They are not neutral... it kinda might get more complicated, but I wouldn't be afraid to get my hands dirty. Maybe you can diversify the pagan perspective by showing different 'political agendas' even among polytheists.

You never know, maybe Jesus is not the only one who decided for a second coming. I can see Dionysos choosing this time to recruit maenads across the cities- like Euripides' Bacchante' redux- no time for Dionysus like a global revolution.:D:

Ares and Loki might even see to test waters with Lucifer, and send a delegation of devotees to open diplomatic contacts with the Antichrist maybe?

I would probably get as many guns as possible, and head off into a remote area of Texas with my family and live off the land. Or maybe start my own army set up my own mini govt.

Assume I've gone blithering hallucinatory delusional, because standard Rapture theology is so completely incoherent and nonsensical that anything appearing to happen that suggests it is proof that I have completely lost touch with reality.

Pre-Tribulation end times people say that the faithful will be Raptured and everyone else will be left behind (then come the plagues, famine, etc.) and then Jesus comes back because he needs to damn everyone before he sets up his Kingdom that lasts for 1,000 years.

Here's a handy chart, I'm going with #2 because it's the most common belief: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/89/Millennial_views.svg/440px-Millennial_views.svg.png even though I think post-trib makes more sense.

*snort* I don't think I have much of a choice here. Continuing on normally wouldn't really be an option considering i'm devoted to the 'enemy' in this whole fiasco. It's probably either hellfire and brimstone for me, or getting things rolling here on earth for Lu :whis:

Interesting story idea though, I'd read it!

This, because the American Fundie Christian Dispensational premillennialism theology is not only "completely incoherent and nonsensical" but has both the Fundie version of the JCI God and the Fundie version of Satan vying for the title of "most evil entity you could put in charge of reality" and approaching the finish line in a draw.

I'd probably go with zombie apocalypse rules when things went crazy.  Find strong people that need socks and get them to protect me from raging hordes.  Assuming things actually go wrong.  If it's just the really annoying godmongers gone poof I think I'd have a d&d game in public square playing heavy metal music.

To take care of my family I'd do what I have to.  But I wouldn't do things I think are evil no matter who asked it.

I think in truth i'd really be confussed.  If the rapture is true then does it hold that things such as Ragnarak (sp) are also true and may be occuring at the same instance?  Things such as the Hopi legends that the current world will end except for a few survivors would also be going through my mind.  Would it also hold that the Olympians would be joined in the final battle with the Titans?

From a spiritual perspective I'd probably not see it as the Christian Rapture but the end of times as viewed through whatever spiritual lense I look at the world through.  For me specifically it would be a combination of the Olympians vs the Titans and influences from the Egyptian end of days mythologies.

So all my responces and plans would also hold a sense of the end.  Personally I'd retreat into the wilderness as much as possible, especially away from populated or once populated places.  Most definitely try to leave no track or trail to indicate my presence of those who have joined me, which would probably be family or close friends or like natures.
