Statues... Letting Go
« on: March 16, 2014, 09:34:51 pm »
I have recently come to a decision that was difficult for me to make, and I spent some time dwelling on it. Essentially, I have come to a transition point along my path. I have a TON of statues that I have collected over the years, but it seems I no longer need them. They are still very special to me, but I feel that someone else might give them a better home. I mean, at this point they're just collecting dust. =( I want to give them to a good home where they will be cherished.

This brings me to my question. What do I do with them? Should I try and sell them? (I did buy them.) Should I donate them to the local pagan group? (Note: There has been a lot of drama and issues with the group, and I'm afraid they'll be resold after I donate them or ignored.) Should I donate them to the local donation store?

I'm very conflicted and this is an issue VERY close to my heart. I plan to thank the statues in a ritual before I send them on. But what would you do in my situation?

Thank you so very much for your help.

Personally, I'd donate them unless they are very rare or unusual. If they are the sort of thing you can buy easily online I don't think you'd really get enough cash to go through the hassle of putting them on ebay or whatever. (But I'm also very lazy about that kind of thing, so.)

I'd probably just give them to a charity shop, in part because I remember perusing Value Village and Goodwill and that sort of place when I was a teenager looking for altar supplies I could afford on my extremely limited budget.

Personally, if the statues cost you much money, I would try to sell them. Either to people I knew who were interested, or on eBay, after giving them a farewell ritual and smudging. I do not think there is some moral issue to selling them after they have served their use to you - as you said, you paid money for them, too.

But if you feel better donating them, I say go for it. Again, either to people you know will appreciate them, or to a local charity. I get most of my ritual supplies secondhand at thrift stores, and know other pagans who do the same, so there is a chance someone could find them there who would appreciate them. If you just think they will get ignored/resold by the local pagan group, I would not bother with it.

What are the statues of? Maybe I or someone on here will want one or two. I'd say ask Randall about making sure it's okay first.

There's a lot!
2 Large Isis candleholder statues (one black & gold, the other colorful)
1 Large Hathor statue (golden paint)
1 Large Anubis statue (black and gold, some minor damage from curious kitties but still fairly nice)
1 Medium Sobek statue (black and gold)
1 Medium Bast statue (black)
1 Anubis canopic jar (large, black with colors)
1 Osiris Oil burner (green, black)
1 Pharaoh's head Oil Burner (black and gold)
1 small Sekhmet Statuette (gold)
1 Small Ma'at statuette (gold)
1 small Horus candleholder statue (damaged, but I found it to be suitable. black and gold)
1 Djehuty (Thoth) candle, unburned, black and gold
1 small Bast statuette (black, chipped ear)
1 small Hathor statuette (gold)

They're all in fairly good condition. Unless the damage was specified on the list, they are intact. All they need is a good cleaning & release ritual.

I'm seriously considering this option. I mean, I love finding things at donation stores I can use on my altar. And I agree, I wouldn't make much money off of them. But it's a tough decision.

Luckily, I did not pay a whole awful lot of money for them. I bought them brand new, but they were reasonable. My main motivation for posting them for sale is to hopefully provide them to another Pagan who would love them as an altarpiece. But I'm not opposed to having someone use them as decoration. After the releasing ritual, they'll be cleansed.

I asked advice from a local Pagan woman, and she suggested setting them aside for a while just to be sure that I really do want to let them go. I think I'll take her advice, but I'm fairly certain I'll still end up giving them to a better home. Plus, with a baby on the way, I won't have the room or the time for them. She also offered to put me in contact with a local group who might want to use them for fundraising. I'm still on the fence, but ya'lls advice has helped a lot. Thank you so much!
