Dream/vision of the Green Man
« on: July 20, 2013, 09:00:19 pm »
My grandfather is seriously ill and probably dying.  Recently he has been telling the family about a strange vision(?) he had (everyone else thinks it was a dream, but he is convinced it really happened).  I'm wondering if someone can help me interpret this, because it seems important --- especially because he's so convinced of it.  I should say that, although he is an atheist, both he and my grandmother have had strange experiences their entire lives: for many years, he has heard voices calling his name in the middle of the night, she apparently saw ghosts, etc.

He says he went downstairs to the front door of the house and found a note from my grandmother (who died a few months ago) taped to the door.  The note said, "To the Green Man: My husband would appreciate a visit from you.  He is in the third bedroom down the hall."

He went back to his room, and later the Green Man came.  He was dressed in a green suit and wore a green yarmulke.  The Green Man touched my grandfather on the side of his head, and after that he says he began to feel hopeful again, to feel that he might recover after all.

He is very convinced that this happened, later going so far as to call the hospital and ask if they had any doctors wearing green that they sent out to people's houses.  What I am wondering is --- what does this mean?  It seems like it ought to mean that either he will recover or he will die soon, but I'm unsure which.

If it's possible that this is related, there is another odd incident that occurred there around the same time:

My grandfather's neighbor claims that a few days ago, she saw my mother wandering around the backyard of my grandfather's house with a white dog.  (This is completely impossible, especially since no one in the family has a white dog.)  She says that she wanted to go outside to talk to her, but a second later, both the woman and the dog were gone.  The neighbor is also convinced this really happened.

Maybe you are over thinking this, could it not be possible these things actually happened (at least on some level)? Let be what be is...

Sounds to me like death omens. My thinking goes: green man=vegetative spirit=cycle of life of from death=returning to the earth. In my religion, anyway, dogs and the color white are associated with ancestral spirits (a word for these spirits even translates as "white ones"). If I saw someone who looked like my mother with a white dog in the backyard, I would consider a Dis (female ancestral spirit) come to lead her descendant to the otherworld.

Yeah . . . to be honest, I hadn't really thought too much about the woman with the dog before I wrote it out, but once I did, it did seem rather like a death omen.  I've never heard of dogs as a death omen before, but I've heard of white horses as a death omen.

Just my own opinion, so do with it as you will.

Upon reading this, the thing that strikes me as the most important, is how this experience made your grandfather feel.

This feeling of hope could mean a return to health, a subconscious peace about his future passing, peace regarding his wife's death, or something else entirely.  Having lost my own father after a prolonged illness, I can understand wanting a clear answer, so I can sympathise.  I would encourage you to concentrate on the effect this vision had on your grandfather.  A feeling of hope is a wonderful thing.
