Archery and Reconstruction
« on: January 24, 2015, 07:50:42 pm »
So I happened to while perusing the internets encounter:

which is an amazing video of a guy performing some incredible archery maneuvers, seriously awesome stuff, and well worth watching.  He studied historical war archery texts and looked at ancient artwork and basically figured out what the techniques were that were being illustrated and started learning how to do them himself.

And after I had people in chat watch the video, I suddenly went, "THIS IS HOW RECONSTRUCTIONISM IS SUPPOSED TO WORK."

So now I am sharing the awesome and also saying "Look at that!  He did this amazing research and then went and did things with it! And also LOOK AT THOSE THINGS."

Because those things.  Wow.

I actually saw that very video on another website very recently. What a coincidence!

That said I'm in two minds about it. On the one hand I am naturally suspicious and I wonder how much in the video was 'real'.

On the other hand the idea makes sense. Modern archery developed for target shooting, and there is no reason to believe that war archer resembled it in anyway.

Hmm, I think I should do some research of my own.

My Celt apparently came across him a while back and noted that he'd developed his skills since the last video he saw, for what that's worth.

Apparently all of it, from what I've read.

I love this so much.
When I saw this first, the only word I could find for this level of skill and awesomeness was 'sexy'.

It's so impressive and I'm wondering how to use this in a story. :D:

We have a bow to hunt deer in the mountains behind us. This is a skill I'm definitely going to try and practice. Very cool!

I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence," [Bill] Gates wrote. "First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don\'t understand why some people are not concerned."

I too saw this video a few days ago and was like "HOLY SH*T!"

... Though when I saw the thread title I thought it would be about something else, since I happen to be currently taking an archery class for partly-spiritual purposes.
