How do you feel about this? Do you sing Christmas music? Do you mind if people think you're Christian when you're not? Or, how can I sing the songs I love so much without compromising my identity (for lack of a better phrase) as a Pagan?

I hate most Christmas music and the stuff I do like is mostly religious in nature. And if I want to sing it, I'm going to sing it. I may not agree with the words, but that's true for a good many songs I sing. I don't really think people are going to assume I'm Christian just because I happen to be singing a Christian song. Do they assume I'm a lesbian when singing about being in love with a woman? Or that I'm heterosexual if it's about a man? And I'm probably Canadian too, because I like singing "O Canada." My Christian friend sings Heathen songs, and I highly doubt anyone would assume she's Heathen just because she can't resist singing along to Tyr. That is, if anyone would hear that and think of religion in the first place.

Maybe it's because it's my nature to not make assumptions, especially based on something like singing a song, but I really don't think that people would automatically think you're a Christian just because. Not unless they're the types who like to think everyone they speak to is Christian (because they can sense devil-worshipers?) and if that's the case, they'd be assuming anyway.

It sounds like you have more of a problem coming to terms with attending church as someone who isn't part of the religion than the music itself. Can you find an excuse to do something else on that day (like wrapping gifts, visiting relatives, or cooking) and just get your music kick somewhere else?

Nope, absolutely not, out of the question. My mom has made that very clear. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if everyone understood that I'm not Christian, that it's just for my mom's sake, I would love to sing every song and would be fine. But I feel like singing would make it appear that I am Christian to everyone and give the wrong idea.

I read your quote and Big Bird suddenly started singing in my mind:  Sing...sing a song...sing out loud...sing out strong.....!

Revel in the holiday.  It's wonderful to share in the joy with others.  Don't worry so much about how you appear and the impression you're giving to others.  This is between you and God (or God/dess(es) or .......)

When someone tells me, "God be with you".... I truly mean it when I say, "and also with you."  I'm not Christian for many reasons, but mostly because I don't believe that Jesus is my Lord and Savior and died for my sins.  However, I see Jesus as a brother and teacher and I'll sing joyfully about a man whose basic message was two-fold:  Love God and Love your neighbor as yourself.

In all the spiritual paths I've explored and tried on, those two tenets remain the core of who I am.

Anyhoo, my point is you can enjoy and celebrate Christmas because of what it means to you.  You can't control the impressions or thoughts of other folks, so don't worry about it.  They'll make their own thoughts regardless of what you do, so why worry?

"Sing.... sing a song...!....  Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear...!"

Best~and Merry Christmas~
