My zine is now in stores
« on: October 24, 2018, 01:42:38 am »
...well, store. It's on the shelves in a store. I'm excited!

"The New Queen of Heaven" is a 34-page booklet summarizing and offering some examples of the worship of the late great Freddie Mercury, legendary frontman of Queen, as a new god. It's currently on sale at Left Bank Books just off Pike Place Market in Seattle. If you drop in, you can pick up a copy for three dollars.

If you can't make it there, you can always download a digital copy HERE. You'll be able to pay whatever you want or get it for free. (There's also a link to my ko-fi on my website if you want to drop me some money for it later.)

This is the first time I've had anything I've written in a store for sale, so it's pretty cool!

Congrats, Eastling!
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Firstly, congratulations!

Secondly, if you don't mind me poking into your practice a little bit, I have been wondering something for a while;

Do Mercury's own religious beliefs influence the way you interact with him in your practice?

He come from a Farsi family, and I recall an interview where his sister said that he had continued to privately practice Zoroastrianism throughout his life. I find that fascinating because it's not something anyone ever discusses.

I know lots of people who listen to Queen, including some fundamentalist Christians and die-hard atheists, and while everyone discusses his sexual orientation and relationships, nobody ever seems to talk about his religion.

Anyway, just thought I would ask, since I've been wondering about it, and it's mildly relevant to this thread.

I'm actually trying to research Zoroastrianism at the moment, but I haven't had a lot of luck in figuring out which sources to go with.

I hesitate to go too deep because his religion was clearly something deeply personal to him, rather than part of his public image. But it does seem like something worth investigating.

Well, since he was a modern man, and not an ancient Persian, I would go with sources on the modern Farsi diaspora and their practices. Unfortunately, those can be hard to find, but there are some non-scholarly videos and such on YouTube published by Zoroastrians about their religion.

In some ways, an insider perspective is actually more reliable than an outside researcher is anyway (and in other ways, it's less so; it's a mixed bag).

I have the good fortune of being acquainted with an Iranian Zoroastrian, who is also a trained historian, in real life, so that's where I get most of my information about the religion. She's a talented scholar, and an expert on the ancient near east, as well as a practitioner of the religion. I can ask her if she knows an reliable sources on the religion that would be useful for someone looking to practice it religiously.

I think I did it correctly earlier today? I'm actually doing it in this post, did I get it right?
