New at Magic, Tarot Casting
« on: November 15, 2012, 02:16:54 am »
I recently went to a favorite used bookstore of mine and was looking through books on Tarot. (I'm not terribly experienced) I found a book called "Tarot Spells" by Janina Renee. After flipping through it a bit i decided to buy it, I have never done Magic before and i liked the way the book felt. All the spells are basic things like spells for good luck and artistic inspiration. They also all have simple set ups done with, you guessed it, Tarot cards.
But i have a few questions before i start messing around with it.

1. I already have a few tarot decks, should i have one specifically for reading and another for casting? or can i use one for both?

2. Anyone know of a decent way to clear out residual energies  from a Tarot Deck before i begin?

3. I've heard that i should clear the casting area of residual energies or minor spirits as well, is there a way to do this that is nondenominational and non golden dawn? (Golden Dawn weirds me out a bit)

4. I have a Quartz crystal i would like to use for this as well, are there any crystal cleansing practices that don't require odd materials? (Im a poor college student)

5. As a college student i live in a dorm, and they don't like us burning stuff, any safe alternatives to candles out there?

Sorry if i sound strange about this, I'm new :)

I can only really help with 2 (lay the cards out in a windowsill and let them sit in the moonlight overnight, or put them in the freezer overnight if the energy is REALLY nasty) and 5. When I lived in a dorm, I had just joined TC, and I had a couple of people here suggest LED candles to me. They're battery-powered, so there's no actual fire involved. Even now, several years later, living in my own apartment, I still use them from time to time, especially if I need to let them go overnight.

You can use one for both if you wish, however, separate decks may be more convenient given that some systems of tarot magic require you to leave patterns of cards set out for days at a time.

2. Anyone know of a decent way to clear out residual energies  from a Tarot Deck before i begin?

I just hold the deck in my hands a minute or two concentrating on clearing it and then shuffle.

Personally I don't usually find this necessary, but if you wish to do it, simply praying to your deity or deities asking for a clear and safe reading is usually enough to block such outside influences.

Leave it out under the direct light of a full moon overnight.

"Tarot Spells" by Janina Renee.

Haven't read it, so I might weigh in on a tangent :)

I have one specifically for reading that started casting regardless. If it... "wants" to multi-task, it will. I'm of the opinion that it doesn't always happen at a conscious level, but if that's where you're at, then there's no shoulds about it. You can do whatever you want with your deck. I believe that the more you work with it, the more it takes on a life of its own, and then begins to negotiate.

I just put the deck in order. When it's physically reset, it feels energetically reset as well.

Rock salt. Running water. Sunlight or moonlight. Pick and choose, however long you feel is necessary. If your ESP isn't tuned enough to be able to check if it's cleansed, ten minutes should be pretty thorough.

Hope that helps!

I don't really read tarot, I personally use a deck of oracle cards, however  it is to my understanding that you can do what you want. If you have a deck that seems right to use for both then do so.

Yesterday I was browsing TC and ran across this link I think it may help you a bit some of it is a little ... exotic. But It all seems like solid well intentioned information to me.

http://duskenpath.blogspot.com/2012/07/wicked-pack-of-cards-learning-to-love.html

I don't think it takes much to create a safe casting area really. Just do what you can to make yourself comfortable, say a prayer or ask the blessing of any gods or guides or spirits you may work with ( I like to lay out a circle with my crystals around me and visualize their inner light warding me and forming a barrier ) it can be as complicated or as simple as you like really.

For cleansing your crystals I set mine in salt, leave them in moonlight, bury them, and or put them in running water for a while. It depends on whats available at the time and what I feel will be most effective.

Cleansing a deck you could  reorder it as I saw posted above, I agree reordering the physical kind of straightens out the energetic.
and if candles are out then I'd try the LED lights for the sake of ritual or if it is just for atmosphere some appropriate music does wonders to get you in the right mindset.

Residual energy and minor spirits... are in a paradigm that, supposedly would respond to your state of mind. If you used a wand and performed the Lesser Banishing Ritual Of The Pentagram first, its effectiveness wouldn't (primarily) be because of the species of tree from which you cut the wood under the hour of Mercury whenever that is. Magic isn't technology, I believe that it requires a connection to the universe for it to work. That connection is your state of mind. The ritual brings you to that state of mind where you are protected.

But, a quicker, more convenient, (and, depending on your learning style, more effective) banishing ritual would be... to laugh. Think of something mildly amusing, and giggle. Reach out in your mind and feel the scorn towards the energy and minor entities that formed in your space without permission, and cackle at how much nothing they are, compared to you, the commander of your area. Whatever. Laugh. Fill the air with the sound.

When you mean it, laughter is like a magic, holy word in a language before words were invented. That word can mean, "If you aren't my friend, then get out."

Everything you just typed really resonates with me a lot, and i feel like this is a huge understatement and awkwardly put, but it's the only way i can describe it. :S
