Magick with ''k''
« on: January 26, 2020, 03:44:56 am »
I read that Aleister Crowley invented this ''magick'' but isn't it a grammar mistake?

It's actually an older spelling of magic, which he revived and coined for used to separate occult arts, from illusionist, stage magic. It's usually used in reference to western esotericism, and not a favourable academic spelling.

Also, language is a thing which evolves over time.

I know it's history but it just jars every time I see it.

Not as bad as "majick" though which seems to be creeping in.....

There is no grammar involved with it; it is spelling.

I see. So, it's a correct spelling. :)

I'm now tempted to start spelling it 'majique' just to be extra pretentious  ;D

LOL Which just goes to show, it's not the spelling, it's the reason it was chosen ;)

How is one even supposed to pronounce that? Not the same as 'Magician', at first glance ...

Magick Ian - great if you're named Ian.

I like your Majique, but when I try to make Magician out of it I end up in the realm of mystic French doggos (which is admittedly quite amusing ).

I thought the same when I first saw it. I've noticed mostly Thelemites that do so, but oddly enough Crowley never used that spelling as far as I know.

I have to agree! I thought I was the only one :D I never use Crowley's spelling and just stick to "magic".
