Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP)
« on: April 07, 2016, 08:46:19 am »
Hi.. umm.. there's a lot that I'm confused about when it comes to magical rituals..
I did a summoning when I was still a teenager, and didn't know what I was doing or getting myself into.
I have heard that the LBRP is a powerful protection spell, but I am also wondering if I can somehow find a way to banish/exorcise/whatever the demonic entity that has been harassing me.

 :( :ninja: :yikes:

So the thing with the LBRP (brief explanation for people who aren't familiar with it at the end of this post) is that it's a practice from a specific context, both in terms of ritual magic, and in terms of cosmology (aka: a particular view of how the universe fits together.)

It's a ritual that can come with a fair bit of 'oomph' behind it, because of repeated use by a significant number of people, over a period of time, but that isn't necessarily the oomph you need for a particular goal.

It's also more generally used either as a general preparation of space (removing unwanted energies) or preparing the *person* by banishing unwanted energies, sealing the practitioner's aura, and so on.)

This means it may or may not be a particularly good choice for banishing an entity - you'd want to look at a lot more detail. It might, however, be good for preparing yourself, purifying a particular space, or other steps that might be part of other banishing work.

To figure out your next steps, it might be necessary to look at the following questions. (If you feel comfortable answering some of them here, people may be able to give more specific advice, but if you don't, answering them for yourself will help you figure out some next steps.)

1) What were you trying to do when you called the entity?

2) Is it possible you ended up inviting or calling something other than you were intending? (Since that may change how you get rid of it)

3) Is there a particular cultural or other context for this entity? (This may give you culturally relevant banishing things to try.)

4) What kind of things does the entity do? (Again, may give you ideas for things to try).

5) What kinds of banishing actions have you tried so far? Did they have any effect? (Stuff that worked a little can give you clues about what stuff might work more.) What happened when you just told it clearly and firmly to go away and stopped engaging with it, if you've tried that?

6) Are other areas of your life in good shape? (It is often easier to banish things when you're keeping up with other responsibilities, you've taken steps to mend or step back from any interpersonal disagreements or problems, you're working on making your life work for you: all these things make you less of a target for things to latch on.)

7) Do you have ritual, religious, spiritual, or other connections to entities who might be relevant, either for helping banish this thing or helping give you strength/protection/wisdom/etc in dealing with it?

And so on.

(Explanation: LBRP is a common shorthand for a ritual called the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, developed in the Golden Dawn system and used by a lot of different esoteric groups since. It can be somewhat complex in Pagan context because it uses specifically Jewish names, terminology, and so on. There's a brief article describing how to do it, and a somewhat longer explanation with some additional context.)

And so on.

1) What were you trying to do when you called the entity?
An ex of mine had given me a sheet of paper with a "spell" on it. It turned out to be a summoning spell, and I had no idea what I was doing.

2) Is it possible you ended up inviting or calling something other than you were intending? (Since that may change how you get rid of it)
I did the spell in a room that gave off energy that spooked me, and later I got a visit from a "psychic vampire".. I don't know what it was.. maybe it really was a night terror.. but.. I felt.. like my sense of spiritual security had diminished and I was terrified. I tried to do a protection spell from Konstantinos's book about Psychic Vampires to protect myself. After that I did feel more safe in my own room again, although at night in dreams I would try to banish the "spirit" and during the day while awake with visualizations of white light. I eventually asked Archangel Michael to protect me and I believe I did something wrong.. I thought this was a regular ghost at first, but after a while I had asked Michael to help me since I guess I was very adamant about at least quieting down the negativity the spirit was putting off. [I guess I'm sort of sensitive to my spiritual environment, but I also could tell it just wanted to be left alone..]

3) Is there a particular cultural or other context for this entity? (This may give you culturally relevant banishing things to try.)
Not really, although.. I believe it is a djinn. ._.

4) What kind of things does the entity do? (Again, may give you ideas for things to try).
The house in general started feeling scarier, the energy was heavier, like wading through water.. I started becoming suicidal.. I have fallen into despair.. A fire got started during some emotional disturbances, and when the renovation crew came in, they informed me that our house was haunted, and that a ghost had been opening the doors.. I hung out with the crew for a little bit, and got to see a very heavy door open by itself.. I've also seen the door creak open.

5) What kinds of banishing actions have you tried so far? Did they have any effect? (Stuff that worked a little can give you clues about what stuff might work more.) What happened when you just told it clearly and firmly to go away and stopped engaging with it, if you've tried that?
I practice visualizing white light.. like a bubble barrier.. I also have something I call unravelling which is kind of like a banishment.. I guess it's sort of an empathic thing.. trying to help the ghost understand their feelings. I don't think this entity liked my "unravelling too much." I think I hurt it, and it felt.. enraged and.. I think it felt like a victim.

6) Are other areas of your life in good shape? (It is often easier to banish things when you're keeping up with other responsibilities, you've taken steps to mend or step back from any interpersonal disagreements or problems, you're working on making your life work for you: all these things make you less of a target for things to latch on.)
I'm in despair, scared to have another run-in with entities, and not really messing with ghosts anymore, even if I still want to.
I do my positive work, I went into a massage therapy class, and bad stuff started happening.. but I was still told that my technique had a good flow.. I feel like a general target for negativity now.. My aura is.. what's the word..? damaged.. torn?

7) Do you have ritual, religious, spiritual, or other connections to entities who might be relevant, either for helping banish this thing or helping give you strength/protection/wisdom/etc in dealing with it?
I have a spirit guide.. He's not strong enough to help me, though.. He usually teaches me things and informs me.. I didn't want to rely on him for help as much.. I guess I can't get back into the habit of letting him help me very easily.. so maybe this is me being stubborn and independent.. Basically, he was very reliable before I stopped relying on him, and he would protect me extremely well and always come through for me.. He still does, just in ways I don't mind..

Thank you for your help. Just answering these questions has really put my stubbornness into perspective for me..

I'm still extremely scared.. but I guess if I find a way to protect myself from djinns I will be okay again.
I'm going to try eating dates..

One other useful question - how long ago was this? And has the stuff that's been happening been consistent since then, or have there been changes over time? (In the kind of thing that happens, how often, how unusual it is, etc.)

So, there's a bunch of things that come to mind reading what you wrote (the more details were incredibly helpful, and I'm suspecting other people may chime in with ideas too.)

1) Stop digging holes:
It's possible that the thing that's hanging around now is not the thing you thought you were summoning. (And either you didn't summon anything, or it went wandering off somewhere else.)

But the other thing to do is stop trying to reach out and understand the thing, or stop trying to connect with ghosts (even with good intentions, like wanting to understand.) Don't try and summon, communicate, etc. with anything you don't have an exisiting clear positive relationship with for a bit. You want to get back to a cleaner setting, where you can figure out better what's going on.

(So: if you do ritual, ritual with your existing spirit guide is probably just fine. But don't go making connections with other entities just yet, or reaching out to spirits, or anything else that is going to open you up more. That's not going to allow you to heal. Think of it like skinning your knee: put a bandage on, don't pick the scab.)

If stuff tries to contact you, tell it no, clearly, once, you're not interested and then do your best to ignore it unless there's a health or safety reason you can't. (Which is to say: do what you need to for those things.)

2) Taking care of yourself

It definitely sounds like some sort of regular cleansing and protection practice would be good for you. Things that would protect your energetic layers, allow you to heal, and keep other stuff from getting to you as badly while you figure out the rest of it.

- Food, drink, necessary meds, etc.

Make sure you're doing your best to eat food that works well for your body, avoid things that make you feel lousy. If you're on medication, or under medical treatment, or seeing a therapist, keep doing that (or look for options that help you, if a specific practitioner isn't working out for you.) All those things will help your subtle body, not just your physical one.

Look at traditional foods people eat when they're sick: they're often good for this kind of thing. (So chicken soup, for example, is tasty but also has a bunch of things in it that are protective and healing physically and energetically)

- A protective practice
Basically, you're looking to identify and reinforce what is you versus what is not you.

The LBRP would be a good choice here, if you feel comfortable with the context it comes from and have time and space to do it regularly.

Note that it can cause a bunch of shifts in how you feel (some people feel more sensitive, some people feel sensitive to different things, some people feel more protected, some people feel like esoteric things are paying more attention to them) so starting carefully and taking good notes can help.

(I'd start with once a day: some people find they want to do it morning and evening, or want it less often, or something else. It's usually not a 'do it once and everything's better' practice, though.)

There are lots of other options, though, if you feel like you want something different. Some options (and you can do these in whatever combination makes sense, most of them stack well.) Simply checking in with yourself at different times can do a whole lot to help too: what are you feeling? Is that coming from you? Somewhere not-you?

Start with deliberately doing it several times a day (as things settle, most people shift this to adjusting when they need.)There's some info on other options on my website under the practices section.

- A regular energetic cleansing routine for you.

I put sea salt (and essential oils associated with cleansing or protection - I like a few drops of rosemary, lavender, juniper, or hyssop) in the bathtub when I do this. If you don't have oils on hand, lavender or tea tree are available in a lot of places other things aren't, including some grocery stores, and lavender is a good general purpose one for a lot of uses.

If you're able to buy beer, there's a beer bath that I really like for cleansing. (Which, basically, is 'pour bottle of beer in tub, immerse self and soak for 20 minutes, duck head under water three times, say suitable prayer / affirmation / etc.')

If you're really limited in resources, see if you can find a salt scrub or a soap bar with salt in it, or one with lavender or rosemary, and use that instead, visualising any energetic ick getting washed down the drain.

- A thorough cleansing (physical and energetic) of your living space.

Ideally the entire house. If you can't do that, the space where you sleep, the bathroom you use most often, and other spaces you spend lots of time. Using a salt-water wash (again with a few drops of essential oils) is great, but just plain regular cleaning tools will work if that's what you have.

Energetic cleansing can use salt, sound (a sharp-sounding chime, clapping loudly or if you don't live with people who will be startled, running around banging something that makes noise and yelling), sweeping motions, incense or other sacred smoke. Make sure you get into the corners, and under furniture and in closets. I always mix up a little salt water to go down every drain and toilet, too. You can also draw protective symbols on the windows and doors (note that on windows, they can reflect if you leave the water to dry.)

You may need to repeat regularly (every couple of weeks) for a bit, especially if you live with other people who drag energetic ick home with them.

- Use of music, computer or phone backgrounds, passwords, other things you look at/see a lot.

Pick things that reinforce the you you want to be (a happy, safe, whole, healed person.) Avoid stuff that makes you feel torn down, not good enough, etc. (This may mean that it might be good to take a break from TV or music or reading material that is heavily ad driven: a lot of ads are designed to make people feel lousy so they buy things.)

This kind of work is the kind of thing where I set up a playlist on my phone and computer with at least 4-6 hours of music that makes me feel good, and listen pretty exclusively to that until I make progress on the thing.

Watching TV shows that are fundamentally hopeful also helps me out a lot when I hit that 'I can't do anything'. (I don't mean 'everything is happy' here, I mean 'makes me feel like there's a point to being a creative human in the world I live in'. Leverage, Doctor Who, and The West Wing all fit that category for me, as examples, and a lot of ensemble cast 'chosen family' type shows do in general.)

If you have a password you type regularly, change it to something that reinforces your current magical goal. (Writing a sentence with the goal, picking the first letter of each word, turning some of them to numbers or characters works pretty well for making an actual password.)

- Finally, again, take steps to mend relationships (or respectfully go elsewhere), deal with any outstanding problems, etc.

Be really careful about any promises you make - don't make ones you aren't sure you can keep. If you've got broken promises lingering out there, do what you can to resolve them (by doing the thing you promised, renegotiating, etc.)

Those things can give unwanted energy easy hooks into your psyche. (Also people who may not be very good for you.) You don't, in my experience, need to actually *fix* everything to see the benefit here, just be making progress toward it.

For example, if you have outstanding money debts, a debt where you haven't sorted out payment arranagements, etc. feels very different, energetically, from one where you have sorted out an agreement you can work with, and especially after you've had a month or two of making payments. Even if they're tiny and it's going to take a long time.

3) Figure out what your next steps about the entity are.

There are reasons this is step 3. First, without the previous two steps, you probably aren't going to have a very different outcome than you've already tried.

Second, if the things you're experiencing change as you do the really through cleansing and taking care of yourself, it's possible that the issue wasn't the entity at all, but other things clinging to your subtle body or in your environment. At the very least, getting any lingering things like that out of the area is going to make it easier to focus on any entities still interested.

At this point, you are down to looking at what you did (as carefully and in as much detail as you can remember it) and then looking for specific steps to take based on that, and on your later experiences. Posting about that in this or another thread might help.

(I have less experience on the direct banishing parts, at least without being able to sense stuff for myself, and I'm hesitant to suggest specific methods without knowing more about what you did in the first place, your other ritual experiences, etc. But other people on the forum will likely have some good ideas too.)
