Is substitution in a Nest Egg spell alright?
« on: July 15, 2012, 09:19:51 pm »
I'm interested in casting a Nest Egg spell, however I'm short on some supplies.  I'm wondering if it's alright to substitute fresh basil in place of Powdered Parsley?

Both are linked with wealth, but I'm wondering if fresh herbs would 'rot' the spell once buried.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Without knowing the specific spell, it is hard to say, but my initial thought is that it should be okay.

Thanks RandallS.  To clarify:

The spell is to assist in a specific financial goal.  It doesn't have to be a monetary number, it can be a spell for abundance or comfort and so on in the financial section of one's life.

The spell is cast by removing the tip of a fresh egg (I have chickens, lucky me), emptying the contents, cleaning out the egg and then adding to the inside of it, a small piece of paper with said goal.  It calls for you to add dry powdered parsley, and then egg is then sealed back up using green wax.  From there, the egg is buried (planted) on your property so your wealth can grow.

Usually the fresher the better in my experience.

Substitutions need to be done carefully.  A lot of people go on about writing your own spells and how that is more powerful than using one from someone else.  The thing is, your own spell might get a boost from originality, but an existing one gets its boost from having been used before and given power by the other users.  Pre-aimed, or trained, if you want to think of it like that.

Since repetition is a factor, you want to get as close to the original as possible.  If there is something you don't have or can't get you need to figure out its exact purpose.  There is a big difference between powdered parsley and fresh basil on many levels.

Is being dried a factor?  There may be a reason to use a dried herb as your substitute, as you've already suggested with the rot factor.  Is it that it is parsley that is important?  Basil may be another herb with the same image, but think of the plant family of parsley and basil - if they are not the same family, it might be better to choose something that is, even if you still have to use fresh and not powdered.

Is it the sound of the word itself?  If the spell includes some kind of cantrip that names the ingredients then you don't want to ruin the flow or rhyme scheme by substituting something that doesn't fit the sound.  Scansion could be the important things there, with the actual ingredient being secondary.

Substitutions can be made if necessary.  Exactitude adds power to existing spells, but if you make your substitutions with thought, so that they fit smoothly into the spell as written, you can still take advantage of that inertial force.  If there is any way you can get the proper ingredients though, even if it means putting the spell off til grocery day and figuring out recipes to use the rest of the herb, that might be the best way to go.
