Magic?
« on: June 17, 2016, 12:15:34 pm »
I'm relatively new to the idea of Magik and paganism in general (although I've done a bit of research) I've recently come to the conclusion that I feel the path of Wicca is the path I would like to take.

I realise that Wicca generally has a lot to do with Magik and I really have no idea how to start with it.

Is there any small things it would be worth me trying (as I'm a solo practicer) to find my feet with the whole idea of Magik? Also Im often unable to practice often at home and I'm not really allowed to do much practice except for odd Saturdays in the month.

If anyone has any small things I can try to find my feet without having to gather much I would be very grateful to hear them.

Many thanks,
Isabel

So, a core idea of magic is creating change in accordance with will (or Will, to indicate that it's a carefully formed version of your will and desire.) In this definition of magic, you don't need tons of *stuff* to make magic go, necessarily: you need to be able to focus and sustain and send out your intention, act along with it to encourage it, and use other techinques.

(That said, tools can make a lot of that *easier*, or work better, or more reliably, which is why there are tools. And in some cases, tools may make it possible for you to do things you couldn't do without the tools. But tools without the underlying practice and intention won't do anything on their own, generally.)

For people learning magic, some core skills include:
- Breathing: We have to do it anyway, and it is a potent method of knowing yourself, controlling your body, and directing your body in certain ways to achieve effects. You can use breath to raise energy, focus it, and use it for your goals.

- Centering : Defined a lot of ways, the way I define it is knowing what's you and what isn't you. This is essential for magic because it helps you figure out where to direct your attention and energy, and what's going to be easier to change (you or your reactions) and what's going to be harder (stuff outside you)

- Grounding : Understanding the flow of energy around us and within us, so that we can let out excess energy (not good for us) and draw in energy from useful sources when we need some, as well as manage the energy and shape it for our goals.

- Visualisation : A lousy word, because it's actually a lot more senses than visual - basically, the ability to create a thing (a goal, an outcome, a desire) in your head, and then send energy to it. That goal might be a thing you could see, but it can also be sounds, feelings, tactile sensations, knowledge, or all sorts of other things. This is a really core skill for a lot of kinds of magic, because that's how you direct your work.

Beyond that, good magic in a witchcraft model, I think, really requires knowing yourself well. Some people think it's about outcome (and that can be really tricky: lots of people think one thing will make them happy, but if they did some more searching inside themselves, they'd realise there might be other options, or that the thing they think will help them isn't the right thing. For example, someone might want a raise at their job, but the raise isn't going to solve that many things and a different job would, even if the idea of job hunting seems overwhelming to start.)

But it's also about knowing how you work best - so in my training, we started with a lot of self-awareness, trying different things out, seeing which things worked best for us, which skills came easier, as well as learning more about how we learned. (There' a bunch of these on my website, if you look at some of the articles on the 'building a practice' page, like 'how do you learn best'

After that, we did a bunch of energy exercises to get familiar with using your energy, what it feels like, and then doing some simple useful things (clearing unwanted energy from a space, then putting energy you want there, simple psychic hygiene and low-key protection and cleansing practices. (The first section on the Practices page has links to all sorts of these.)

Once those skills are solid, then moving on to other kinds of spells makes sense, but you'll also have a much better idea which ones you might want to try, or which methods might work well for you.

Spend the next week operating under the assumption that the universe is trying to send you a message and you just need to try and notice what it is.

There are several types of magic operations, and they may be classified in several different ways, but I have found the following useful:

  • Initiatory magic (The welcoming of an individual into a group, and personal growth, belong to this category)
  • Celebratory magic (Celebrations of seasons and festivals belong to this category)
  • Explorative magic (Exploring the psyche of the practitioner or presumed inner aspects of the worlds are activities under this label)
  • Projective magic (Healing, apotropaic rites, wealth spells and similar belong under this label, or, in short, opening up for meaningful coincidences)

I don't know enough about Wicca, to give you any advice about that particular style of magic, but if you want to check how some Druids perform magic today, the following link might be interesting:

Also, don't get discouraged. It takes time and everyone moves, quite literally, at their own pace with this. Conversely, this is also something you can't force. Just keep it up and let it happen when it will happen.
