Crystal question!
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:12:14 pm »
I was rummaging through some of my old stuff and I found some crystal beads that I had picked out when I was younger and I was wondering if since they have a hole drilled through them ( small ones to run a string through)  if maybe that somehow drained them if their magic(k)al properties, or if they should be fine.
Thanks!

The holes are not going to erase the properties of the crystals, in my opinion.Quartz will still be quartz, with all it's inherent properties, amethyst will still be amethyst, and so on. I do not believe that adding holes would have any more effect than tumbling or polishing would.

Also, considering all the metaphysical stores that sell gemstone-beaded bracelets for specific purposes (luck, financial success, love, etc.), the inherent properties probably aren't affected by drilling anymore than by tumbling and polishing.

In my experience, cutting, drilling, polishing, etc. has never drained properties out of a stone.  I use beads all the time and find them effective.

That said, I do think cutting and polishing, specifically, can *change* the stone's intensity.

F'ex, I do much better with the smoother, softer energy of amethyst in cabochon form than in faceted form, and faceted is better for me than a raw amethyst crystal. Usually.  OTOH, polished smokey quartz is not as effective for me as a raw smokey quartz crystal.

Some of those differences are probably due to the inherent differences between individual specimens of the same kind of stone. But I think some are about the cut.

You can find beads that are smooth polished (which is the bead analogue to cabochons),  faceted, or raw.  I think that makes more of a difference than the drilling.

Remember, too, that different people react differently to stones.  What works for me might not work for you.  F'ex, lots of people find hematite very effective for grounding. I can't touch (natural) hematite without it shattering in my hand.  Literally.  It leaves me feeling jittery and like I'm about to shatter.  (Man-made hematite is different.)

You have to experiment to find what works best for you.

(Natural) Hematite feels good and, well, natural, to me. Hemalike (man-made hematite) feels wrong and heavy and bleh whenever I've had any of it. In fact, I have a nice little hemalike choker-type necklace that I can't wear because of that.

OTOH, I've read/heard that one is not supposed to wear black onyx to bed/while sleeping because it is supposed to bring nightmares. I have no such issue with my big black onyx ring that resides on my right index finger.

Ymmv of course and, like you said, Aster, what works for one, may not always work for another.

Thank you all for your wonderful replies! I just wasn't 100% on it but thanks for clearing this up for me.
