Crystal Identification Help
« on: July 27, 2012, 09:01:02 pm »
When I was little, I used to collect rocks and crystals. Going through some boxes, I found some of my old ones! The trouble is, I have no clue what they are, how to begin identifying them, or if they even have magickal properties.
I'd really appreciate if any of you could take a crack at guessing what they are. I'll take better close-ups later if need be, but any one you can help with would be awesome.

I think a closer look at individual or smaller groups would help a great deal. Some light on the matter with a solid background would help bring out the colors and details more and that would be very helpful. If you figure out the hardness of them, it would help in identification as well if you come to narrowing options down.

But here are my guesses by rows from left to right:

First Row
1. Tiger eye or picture jasper
2.
3.Citrine
4.carnelian
5.carnelian
6.red jasper
7.
8.
9.garnet
10.kyanite
11. amber, agate, jasper
12. Lepidolite

Second Row
1.Turquoise or amazonite or chrysocolla
2.blue beryl
3.Chrysoprase or amazonite or chrysocolla
4.onyx or obsidian
5.white aventurine
6.Sodalite
7.amazonite, chrsoprase, ruby in fuschite
8.Turquoise
9.
10. Jet
11.

Third Row
1. Agate
2. Quartz
3.Some kind of jasper
4. Dyed or red agate
5.Smokey quartz
6.
7. Amber
8.Some kind of tourmaline

Wow, thank you so much. That really helps a lot, and at least gives me a starting point.
It's finally stopped raining and I have power back, so I'll try to get some better pictures today.

I think number 10 is Pyrite, not Kyanite (I may be wrong of course).

It would be best to put them on a white back ground and have a pics that are closer  - maybe 6 rocks in a pic, then we could all be a lot more accurate.

I used to have a giant rock collection too...I wonder what happened to them all?

If you can get a better picture, I'll bust out my massive identification guide on anything that's being difficult to tell. Can you turn up the DPI on your camera maybe?

I just love looking at rock collections! I agree that they need to be photographed on a white surface (and try adjusting the white balance to suit the light conditions, if you've got a point-and-shoot digital cam, go into manual mode and you should be able to fix it from there) to be able to confidently identify them all.

Have fun learning about their properties :)
