A bit of an unexpected resource...?
« on: January 11, 2021, 03:21:09 pm »
In my living room over the festive December period (as many of you no doubt recall) I had a Yule tree, which was basically a found/scavenged branch from a nearby hawthorn tree (which had been detached from the tree by recent stormy weather).  I'm quite big on found things, it's serendipitous or almost like a little gift given by nature, and I particularly liked the look of this branch so I didn't stop to think about any superstitions related to this wood (fortunately, I'm not very superstitious).

I've decided to save the branch, so for the sake of storage I've trimmed the smaller twigs off the main stem, so that each resulting smaller branch can stand in a vase.  As part of this process, I've ended up with a small number of independent hawthorns -- as in, the thorns, in a jar.

So my question is, what would you be inclined to do with these thorns?  One option is to return them to the tree, as a thank you.  A quick internet search brought back a couple of spells but I'm not that big on magic, as some of you may be aware (and, in view of the superstition attached to hawthorn at other times than May, I don't want to tempt fate (albeit that, as mentioned, I'm not that superstitious)).

I have a few of these too (well, maybe not the same species, but they are some wicked finger-long thorns) and likewise don't know what to do with them. Aside from voodoo-doll-like cursing.

My thought would be a witch bottle, but that, also, is a spell of sorts, just defensive rather than offensive.

That was my first thought, actually, but need to do some research   :)
