Now these pro-gay Christian churches exist, and other denominations/branches are more accepting. This evolution is encouraging and speaks to the strengths of Christianity.

But this increased acceptance is a recent development (and counterbalanced by the fact that other branches of Christianity form the main reservoir of resistance to LGBTQ equal rights in many parts of the world, incl. the U.S.). Many of us remember a time when Christian churches were nearly universally condemning of anything LGBTQ. (Note to 70sWoodstock: I'm in my early 50s, so I'm nearly in your age group.) For some of us, that has rendered Christianity irredeemably toxic.

Not that I was ever a candidate for that religion anyway, but I just wanted to affirm where the OP might have been coming from.
