Hello All! Student in need of Feedback & Educating
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:35:06 pm »
Hey everyone,

I am a new member here and i was hoping that everyone could assist me in a project i am working on based on the Pagan religion and systems of belief.  I'm looking for feedback from the community on certain issues and questions which will be included in the final product: an Ethnographic Research Paper

I Created a thread with a series of questions to respond to and i greatly appreciate any and all comments and feedback!

Post your Feedback here on this Thread:)

Much Thanks

Hi, Murdoque:

Have you read our research guidelines?  They can be found here:

http://www.ecauldron.com/forum/misc.php?do=vsarules

We ask that you read and follow them when trying to conduct research at TC.  If your paper is for a post-secondary class, or if you plan on using direct quotes from our members we ask that you email the hosts first with a complete description of your program and paper.

Thank you,
Marilyn

Hi, Murdoque:

Have you read our research guidelines?

There are no guidelines which refer specifically to asking questions or doing research, only advertisement... :confused:and considering i am doing this paper for a college assignment i assumed that the community would be open minded and enjoy helping educate others on their individual belief.  Obviously i understand the idea of intellectual property and
attributing quotes to their proper source.

I also understand Paganism as an umbrella term, but it simply makes more sense to encapsulate it under that term rather than referencing every division.  You should define your belief like listed in the questions.

Quite frankly I was shocked by the poor reception of the questions i had posted earlier... Even the closing of the thread. I hope you all can grow outside of your own confines and give assistance, The only disservice you are doing is to yourself and your beliefs. Practice what you preach.

I hope that the thread can be reopened in order to facilitate further conversation about the divisions of Paganism.:cf:

Much Thanks

For some reason, I cannot seem to link directly to the research guidelines.  It's under "more rules" and the research guidelines.  I'm sorry it's not working directly, and we'll try to fix that.

That doesn't mean the rules don't apply.  To sum up - to use our board to post a survey, you have to contact the hosts via email first and get their approval.  This is NOT subject to debate or argument.

I owe you an apology there - I thought I was linking directly to the research guidelines but apparently the link only went to the general rules page.  If you click the drop-down box at the top of the page you will see the specific rules for different areas, research among them.

This was your first post, and we do not know you.  You did not make clear what level your research was for; we have different expectations for different levels.  Since you are at a college level I would expect you to understand the importance, in manners if nothing else, of getting permission before entering a community and quizzing its members.

Some of us may enjoy educating others - those are the ones most likely to respond to your questions.  We cannot just assume that you understand the importance of protecting your sources.  You have to state that up front. (as you have now done)

There is no 'should'.  Ask proper questions.  Treating paganism as one monolithic religion does not make sense to most of us.  You don't have to reference every division - simply allow for the probability of different values, tenets, etc. according to our own religions.

The fact that you are shocked that we are not falling all over ourselves to be research subjects is rather shocking to me.  Advising us to 'grow' by helping you is rather self-serving, not to mention condescending.  Diplomacy is a valuable skill if you expect to get answers/assistance in any field.

We don't preach.  It's kind of a thing.

Certainly more diplomatic than the rest of your post.  The thread will be re-opened when you follow the research guidelines and seek permission from the hosts.  IF they grant it.

Yes, there are: "Research Guidelines" in the drop-down box in the rules area.  Here is a direct link:

To add to what Shad and Marilyn have said: if you are in a college-level ethnography course, then you should have learned something about research ethics and treating the communities you're studying with respect; these are the fundamental tenets of modern ethnography.  Coming in here, refusing to follow the rules, condescending to the members, and demanding that we "practice what we preach" and fill out your survey -- this is appalling behavior from any perspective, but especially for an ethnographic researcher.

I'm a college professor who teaches folklore.  If you were my student, your conduct here would earn you a failing grade on the assignment, and a talking-to from the university research ethics board.

We don't allow for accounts to be deleted.  Which is also in our rules.

We don't need to exercise authority over the 'net.  But it is our responsibility to exercise it here.

Goodbye.
