A belated intro
« on: June 27, 2017, 01:41:50 am »
Hello everybody!
My name is Arken, I am 18 and currently in between school with hopes to go take a studio art course next year. I've been reading and researching magic and paganism for a few years now, though I've never actually done anything aside from simple things with rocks and sigils. Though I have recently been studying Druidry and I have been feeling a call to Thoth for a while? And Baphomet, but I want to get more info about him first before I decide anything. I'd also love to get into spirit working but I guess that's a project for another day.
I'm really excited to meet all of you guys and finally get involved in some sort of pagan community

Hello, Arken!
I'm new here as well, if you have any questions about Druidry, let me know. I can clear up most questions, but I don't claim to know everything.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas.

*sends out the Hawke-signal*

Okay so this was posted like two weeks ago but still. I'm pretty sure HarpingHawke and I are the only legit young people here. If you think of paganism as a high-school imagine TC as the teacher's lounge. SunflowerP is the Principal, RandallS is the Superintendent, and the rest vary depending on their moods. Except Altair, who is consistently the gym coach. I hate him but he's great. He also requires a virgin sacrifice on every new moon; so keep that in mind.

But yes I am very happy to see you. Please stick around; we hardly get any newbies that don't drift away these days, especially not young adults, and listening to Morag reminisce over hunting Mastadons in her youth has gotten passé. I promise we don't bite. Well EmmaEldritch does bite but only professionally-speaking. If you're not an idiot -- and first impressions tell me you're a smart cookie; like a snickerdoodle. Are you cinnamon-y and delicious? -- then we're a friendly bunch. So slip off your shoes and stay awhile. Hawke can probably fix you tea if you ask nicely but I should warn you that it will have just the barest hint of onion.

As regards your art, what kind do you do? Is it modern/contemporary art or is it good art? You mentioned a studio art course. Is it, like, a community college course or other type of standalone course or will it be art school-ish? Druidry isn't the worst thing in the world and there are several different kinds (as I'm sure you know) so check out OBOD, AODA, and ADF if you haven't already. That should give a nice overview. Also John Michael Greer is a babe so read his stuff.

I should point out that Thoth is a very different god from Djehuety. The former is a Graeco-Egyptian/Ptolemaic evolution of the latter and I suspect that they might not like being interchanged. This is important in that if for example one was to call on Venus and expect Aphrodite to open the door they would be very disappointed. And possibly smote. UPG tells me that Venus thinks Aphrodite is a bit of a tramp and while I can't confirm that... yeah. There's not /that/ much out there in the way of modern G-E polytheism but I'd check out Sannion's "Echos of Alexandria" (you can find it on Amazon) and the group Neos Alexandria.

Finally there's Baphomet. Don't bother trying to 'get more info' on him. There isn't anything worth getting. The sole exception to that is "A Gift of Maggots", which is an anthology about him written by some modern devotees. I was looking for some very specific things in my religion not too long ago so I bought the book to see what was up. The devotional poetry at the beginning was amazing and really clicked with me and what I felt I needed at that time; so without reading further at that point I was ready to go. Put a lovely statue of him in my Amazon cart and other bits and bobs for an altar and promptly ordered them before getting back to the book; and starting the essays.

What came next was FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK I DO NOT WANT THIS DEITY TO NOTICE ME NOPE NOPE NOPE THIS WILL NOT BE GOOD JESUS FUCK WHAT HAVE I DONE.

Reading further it was immediately made clear to me that Baphomet was not what I needed at the time. If there ever *is* a time when I think I need Baphomet then I might as well just eat a gun because things would be bad. As a strict monotheist in my heart of hearts Baphomet still scares the fuck out of me and I don't even think he exists. This is all because, basically, the type of person that I am is the type of person that Baphomet eats for breakfast. Are you the same, or do you genuinely need what he brings to the table? I have no idea but until you read that damn book, neither do you. It's published by Asphodel Press and is like $5 for a PDF so you have no excuse to not read it.

Ciao,

~Castus

Every time I lurk on the board I see this reply and think to myself "Man I really need to reply to that!", but I never do and I am sorry for that.

Anyways, I do modern art I guess? Digital when I'm motivated, traditional when I'm not, usually personal projects or fan art.
I have been looking at the different Druid groups and numerous books to go along with those and I'm still undecided? Although the groups look very fulfilling, something about organized religion is a bit irksome to me. I might just take a more eccentric approach to it, find my own path in the woods if you will. With all the books I have, I should be able to stitch together some sort of eccentric Druid-inspired path that works for me.

In however many months it's been I have been looking more into the Gods I feel more comfortable with. I've fallen away from Baphomet (partly because of your reply, sounds a bit scary and not what I'm looking for--) but I have tried contacting Thoth. I haven't been writing letters to him as much as I should, but I do think he contacted me in the form of a discarded fortune so that's something!
I'll have to look more into the differences of Thoth and Dejhuety sometime, I've always thought they're the same. But I could be wrong

I think that's that, so thanks for the reply and sorry for the belated reply..
