What would your specialist subject be?
« on: April 18, 2019, 07:19:40 am »
I'm frequently impressed with how knowledgeable many TC members appear to be and it inspired me to make this thread.

I don't know if you guys in the US etc have the TV show Mastermind, but it's quite famous here and the contestants choose a specialist subject to be quizzed on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastermind_%28TV_series%29 / https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mk1s

So, what would your specialist subject be?  (Can be related to your paganism or just a general topic (or both, if you like).)

Fun topic!

My specialty would probably be animation. I'm very well versed in history, I know most of what's required to know about current production pipeline practices (and how to do the thing as well), I keep up with industry trends and tech/software development, and I just really like watching cartoons, y'all.

I could probably also talk at great length about webcomics.

Visual art and art history, definitely. I could also give a good showing in linguistics and world religions.

I am sort of an academic Jack Of All Trades, Master Of None, former Professional Student. That said, if I did a PhD it would be in STS and/or Sociology and History of Science.

(STS is Science and Technology Studies, related to History of Science, but more contemporary/interdisciplinary social study of Science, Technology, Environment, Medicine, etc.)

Well, as far as religious topics go...I've got a lot of ideas, but no confirmation that would make sense to anyone else!

But looking to the rest of existence...my specialist subject is rail passenger travel during the classic streamliner era. I'm recognized as somewhat of an expert. See also Streamliner Schedules (streamlinerschedules.com).

Probably Science- especially Biology and history. I have a bachelors in Biology, but I’ve always studied history and related topics for fun.

In a way, yes. My love of science and skepticism is part of why I tend to distinguish between spiritual belief and absolute faith or knowledge. I also recognize that the dilemmas faced by human civilization right now are partially spiritual and can’t be solved just by scientific data. For example, we have all the data we need on climate change. But our society is too sick to act even when the situation is clear.

I am, because of my day job, somewhere between one of the top fifty (at least working in English) and top ten on particular topics related to the institution I work at, mostly because there are not actually that many people doing sustained wide-ranging work in this particular niche of the field. (Which I'm not identifying more precisely than that, see 'not many people doing it' but it includes a particular piece of disability history, and more generally aspects of educational theory, inclusion in education, etc.)

(I am not great on dates, but I'm great on 'this thing lead to that thing changing')

My undergrad education was a double major in music (focus on theory and composition) and medieval/renaissance studies, about which I can talk for hours and know lots of random things.

My actual specialist skill is 'get information out of search engines' and 'write things that take complex information and give people more ways into it without overly simplifying what's going on'. There's a reason that several of my jobs have been 'translator between library and technology' focused.

That is a hard question form me. I know a lot about art mediums and skills. Animal behavior, animal totems, grounding and cooking, it would be very difficult to pick one. I have always been driven to learn, and have spent most of my life on a very tight budget. I haven't let that stop me, so I taught myself everything I found of value or just interested me. I even learned how to make balloon animals. Cooking fell into the category of being able to make anything I couldn't afford. I have found that being able to make things is very freeing. I have even made a clam bake on my stove at home.

Word. I like the sense of independence of making or modifying something to be just the way I want it, and not being restricted by what others are manufacturing and selling.

Birds.

Related: I have a Double Jeopardy! audio Daily Double fantasy, where I stun the crowd by identifying an unusual species by voice alone.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs
