"I'm an Asparagus!" - making a vegetable zodiac
« on: June 16, 2021, 06:25:35 pm »
I recently saw the above line, (in a post making fun of people who blame their bad habits on their astrological sign) and it got me thinking: what would a vegetable zodiac look like? There already is an animal version - the Chinese zodiac - and the "Celtic tree calendar."

Asparagus would be May, I think. And pumpkins for October, maybe? What would you put in the other spots?

I like zucchini for August, but for no other reason except I like the word!    ;D

The Norwegian version would comprise entirely of different varieties of potatoes.

That could actually be cool - there are some nifty potato breeds lurking around :)

It does have an exotic flair, doesn't it?

The winter months would have to be root vegetables, I suppose. Parsnips in January?

What would you put in the other spots?

Maybe tomato for July? Though technically, that's a fruit.

Also: Are we distinguishing zodiac from monthly calendar? Is there some difference we're observing? Will we be spelling out personal attributes for each vegetable? ("Those born under the sign of Asparagus stink at getting pissed off.")

And of course, there'd have to be a separate one for fruits.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Personally, I think tomato is thought of under the vegetable umbrella often enough that it could be considered for the vegetable zodiac.

I'd love to see this, though I'm not sure my imagination is, well, imaginative enough so I'll have to be a spectator!

And of course, there'd have to be a separate one for fruits.

Ah, so then can the tomato feature more than once...?!

I was thinking of 'vegetable' in the culinary sense more than the botanical sense (And it's not like those two categories have to be mutually exclusive ...)

Speaking of, what are your opinions on rhubarb?

I started with a plain month-association because it seemed easier to keep track of, to start with. If we can get together a full dozen, I'll start thinking about all the rest of it!

Much the same can be said of turnips (I'm thinking of yellow ones, rutabagas, but the purple-topped white ones could also be a thing), and of potatoes. Potatoes especially seem like something not to omit here.

Carrots don't store quite as well as potatoes or turnips, but they do store well; perhaps a slot early in the winter months?

I look at this and think, what veggies are conspicuously absent? The first two to come to mind are broccoli and green peas. And they slot pretty well into the unassigned months, too!

Broccoli fits well (for me) with December, since it's a Christmas-dinner standard in my family. Peas work for April, since their floral cousin the sweet pea is (one of) the birth-flower(s) for April, and green peas are among the early spring vegetables.
