Easing the passing of a tree
« on: July 17, 2018, 12:46:41 pm »
There's an old oak tree in my yard that, sadly, I have to have cut down soon. The previous owner of our house had the tree topped before we moved in, and it's been a death sentence for this oak tree. It's been slowly rotting down the center from the top down, and the rot has now reached the bottom of the tree. It still looks healthy on the outside, but a fist-sized hole in the bark near the bottom shows insides that are black, crumbly, and crawling with termites and carpenter ants.

I want to do some sort of ceremony to honor this tree before I have it cut down, but honestly I don't even know where to begin. I've already gone out and talked to the tree, told it what was happening and why, and asked it to prepare for this change, but I feel like I should do more. Any suggestions?

Can you harvest some acorns from it and start some seedlings?

When my beloved eastern redbud died, I kept some sections of the trunk and some of the bigger branches and used the as rustic decor in the garden.
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

That was my original thought, but we're about 2 months too early for acorns. :/
