Calling All Tree-Lovers
« on: June 19, 2018, 04:30:00 pm »
So I came across a tree on a walk today, and felt especially drawn to it. Still not sure why, but any attempt I've made to identify it has failed.

Anyone out there more arboreally inclined than myself who can help out? (More detailed pics to follow.)

It looks like it might be a willow of some sort?

Looks like Eleagnus angustifolia, aka Russian olive. They're native to Eurasia but introduced to the US for decorative planting, they've since escaped cultivation and many states consider them an invasive species.

I can't blame you for being drawn to it, it's a striking tree. My best friend/neighbor had one in his yard that I used to climb all the time as a kid, it seemed to thrive on the attention from us kids. When he moved away and the kids stopped playing on it the tree died shortly thereafter. :(

I'm pretty sure that's an olive tree species, specifically Russian Olive, or Elaeagnus angustifolia - as @Noctua correctly stated. It's considered both an introduced and invasive species, namely due to its ability to live in poor soils, and low seedling mortality rate, as well as it being loved by birds as a food source. While that can be seen as a good thing, it also matures really fast, and can outcompete local native flora.
