That said I still celebrate the public new year of December 31st with a raised glass and open door

I can go for the raised glass (not so much the open door, I've learned to like a nice quiet secular new year - with movies and snacks, my usual faves).

LOL My mistake. I was refering to a tradition my mother taught me ( not sure how widespread it is ) of letting the old year out one door and the new in the other

Oh that is vaguely familiar from somewhere now that you mention it - I obviously initially thought you meant an open door policy to friends & etc (which is something I might've done once upon a time, but one grows to become an old fart and enjoy the peace of an evening doing one's own thing!).

I was thinking about all the times we have a new start - do you use January 1 as your fresh start? Do you follow a ritual year that does something else? (Samhain, Yule, the flooding of the Nile? something else?)
Seems weird, but it's kind of complicated. We say it's Samhain. Don't know if it was some interpretation of the Coligny Calendar, Victorian, or even further "Witch-lore" behind that whole Wheel of the Year theme, but in practise it feels more like Imbolg. For instances we don't do any initiations, take on any Neophytes, or start any major, new projects from Samhain to Imbolg, and the whole theme around that time feels, and makes more sense.

Mundanely, though, it's January 1st. The Calendar year is new, you have the New Years' parties, resolutions, and all of that, so that's what I go by as well.

Yup, my birthday. The ritual I do is the birthday cake with candles, like all people do. :)
