I created another version of this thread over on the temporary .org TC site earlier this year, and I wanted to capture those responses so (with Darkhawk's okay via Discord), I'm about to copy and paste them here.

Know one knows for sure. There is a folk tradition that Aztec New Year began on March 12. However, I go with Rafael Tena's conclusion that the Mexican calendar began on February 23rd (in the Georgian calendar).

Well, my tradition is my own. It's an Irish tradtion with shamanic and eclectic overtones.

My new year starts at Samhain but culminates at the Winter Solstice. The 6 weeks between start and finish is a 'between time'. A time for serious reflection of the past year's successes and failures; and planning the next year's goals.

At the Solatice ritual I cast the past year into the fire and bury the new year in potting soil with lily of the valley bulbs. (Yes, I keep a copy of what I planted for the next year's reflections. I have been keeping this New Year for over 40 years.

I like any and all new years, but more specifically I celebrate Samhain, Yule-to-Jan-1, and Imbolc-Lunar-New-Year as opportunities for new starts and other new yearish oomphs for projects.

Eclecticwheel told us:-

As I'm sure our forum friends know my communal home is the Episcopal Church, and our New Year begins with Advent. But these days my primary lens of looking through the world is the philosophy and worldview I've built through my Rites in which the beginning of the year is also Advent, but the themes and meanings of the seasons have been adjusted based on my life history and personal associations.

In my Rite this is a time when the voice of the reading in the ritual reflects a longing for the beloved, a longing for love and peace, and she goes through pain, violation, and rejection. In the end she finds beauty and value in herself, though at this time of the year she is not united with the beloved. Part of the significance is that she finds what she needs within.

In the third calendar I am working on the New Year simply begins with January 1st, but I am still working out what to do with it. I also celebrate the secular new year on this day.

I kind of have two: January 1, and the beginning of September - the start of the school year here.

I'm still in the process of figuring out seasonal traditions of my own. My family's tradition for Jan 1 is to stay up until midnight, watch the Times Square ball drop, and drink champagne. If I'm by myself, though, I prefer to get up at dawn to do an execration and then eat soba noodles. I've heard the latter is a common new years tradition in Japan, but mostly I like soba.

Jenett's update:-

Quote
I am a 'multiple new years' sort of person.

I start with September 22nd, which is my birthday, and a time to reflect on my own personal cycles and what that means, and what was good and what I want to go at differently.

My religious calendar means that October 31st is the end of the old year, and there's a fallow period until December 22nd (Samhain and Yule, being as I'm in the Northern Hemisphere.) Samhain is where I wrap up longer-term magical goals for the year and then I let things rest and see what emerges for goals for the next year, without putting any particular pressure on myself.

Yule is the first light and the growing seed of what I'm going to focus on for the next year, and by January 1 and the calendar new year, I have an idea of a general focus.

I've taken to picking a word for the year and making a phone wallpaper that goes with it, and I do that sometime between the week I take off for Yule from work (which may start around the 16th or 17th, depending on the timing) and New Year's.

(Apologies if there's duplication.)

And finally Sobekemiti:-

Quote
For me, it's Feb 1. I'm a Kemetic, that's the basis of the calendar I use, and mine is fixed date, so the seasons line up for the southern hemisphere. So I put Wep Ronpet, my new year, on Feb 1. It ties in with all the energy at that time of year too, because that's kind of when things really start to ramp up again after the long summer/Christmas break.

I have kind of noticed also that I'm feeling a weird liminal space between Feb 1 and the lunar new year too, which I hadn't noticed before, so I'm still figuring out what to do with that, but yeah, for the most part, it's Feb 1. That's my new year.

I was thinking about all the times we have a new start - do you use January 1 as your fresh start? Do you follow a ritual year that does something else? (Samhain, Yule, the flooding of the Nile? something else?)

When it comes to ritual, I tend to celebrate the new year in March. In the Russian civil calendar, that’s when it started up until the 14th century. A New Years in spring is apparently pretty common. The Persian Nowruz is another example.

For me, it gives new meaning to the March ritual of tossing the Marzanna effigy into a river. It’s literally getting rid of the old year, (hopefully) with all of its negative aspects.

In a fully unhealthy way, I don't really notice the passage of time, I just wake up one day and realize that, for example, I've been living in this place for 5 years. So like, in practice, it's late January, when finally start writing the correct year on things.

That said, it's Halloween/Nov 1 in my witch and pagan things. No deep reason, it just feels like the right time to refresh things.

I'm a Roman reconstructionist first and foremost, so my ritual year and civil year are in accordance with one another. But there's a bit of wrinkle, in that as part of my ancestor worship I also honor Saxon and Celtic gods, and as part of my cult to Dionysos and Demeter, I celebrate some Hellenic festivals as well. Trouble is, these cultures mostly used lunar calendars rather than something tied directly to the solar year.
I have a hard time keeping to lunar cycles where I'm at (my condo's placement makes it hard for me to see the moon on a whim). So while it might be more historically authentic to celebrate certain festivals on dates synchronized to the lunar year, I often will celebrate them on lunisolar civil calendar dates close to those moons. So, yeah, Yule was probably celebrated on the full moon following the Winter Solstice, rather than the solstice itself, but because so much of our culture has reframed yuletide things around the solstice week, I just celebrate it then. Same with Eostre's blot among the English probably being on the full moon after the new moon following the Spring Equinox; I either celebrate it on the Equinox, or on Easter.

I'm slowly finding my path as a Hellenic, as my worship includes Dionysos and Persephone, and possibly other Greek deities. I've noticed since I started my practice that I have some weird energies going on through the year that makes it feel like a "New Year" and "Not a New Year."

Just to get this out of the way: January 1 used to mean a lot to me, but now that I've hit 30 (Gods, I can't believe I typed that), I don't see it really as an important date to celebrate. Yes, we have a new solar year, but it just doesn't... feel new to me. Instead, I feel the beginning of September is a new year - which in my case it is due to the school year starting after Labor Day and when I have to go back to teaching middle school students.

I'm also starting to feel that Spring in general is a "New Year" of sorts. Last year, and this year, I noticed that I started up and refreshed my fitness routine, and - probably, but hopefully not - the Autumn is when I'll peter out (again, fingers crossed this doesn't happen). In addition, I've noticed that around May/June, I'm feeling really connected with everything around me, especially my connection with my deities.

That leads me to my calendar - as of right now, I'm working with just the Solstices and Equinoxes, as well as the Moon. I'll try to do more prayers and work around the Full Moon but that hasn't worked out well for the past few months, and major celebrations around the Equinoxes/Solstices. Around those times, I try to do something that is related to the season. So, for example, Mabon/Autumn Equinox, I did a ceremony for Persephone's travel to the Underworld. This Spring, I did her Return to Earth, and celebrated Persephone, Dionysos, and Apollo. So far I'm liking it, and I think they do to?

A Reminder:
Hi, TheGreenWizard,

We don't mind long posts here, but to avoid having a hard-to-read wall-o'-text, hitting "enter" twice every few lines adds some white space and makes it easier to follow - I've edited yours to add those breaks (all but one were places where you'd tried to make a break but only hit "enter" once so there was no white space between), but it's a really good habit to get into yourself.

They don't have to be the "proper" place for paragraph breaks (we're interested in readability more than technicalities), or a complete change of thought - some thoughts take a lot of lines and need to be broken up into sub-thoughts - as long as they're there.

This isn't a formal warning, just a reminder. No reply is necessary, but if you have questions or need clarification,  please feel free to contact a member of staff privately.

Thanks!

I'm still getting used to how I live with the seasons rather than how I've learnt they're meant to be.

Oddly it feels like parts of the year change over at different times so there's no one date which is the universal new year.. Think it's going to take time to figure that one out.

That said I still celebrate the public new year of December 31st with a raised glass and open door
