Tips on how to stay Up All Night
« on: December 02, 2014, 07:13:11 pm »
The Cauldron's annual solstice celebration, "Up All Night" (UAN), is less than 3 weeks away! (Begnning at sunset on Sunday, December 21--more information on what these festivities are all about can be found  here)

So I figured now is a good time to start compiling everyone's advice on the best ways to stay awake--even if you're just planning a brief visit with us during UAN, but esp. for those of us who intend to go the distance.

I'll start...

My No. 1 Rule for Staying Up All Night: Limit alcohol to a minimum.
I know, it's a downer, because if there's a night for some serious booze-soaked revelry, it's the solstice. But the second I get even a little bit drunk, if I'm tired (and as UAN veterans know, by the latter half of the night, you are *tired*), I'm out like a light. Red wine in particular works on me like a bottle of industrial-strength Lunesta. So I'll be keeping it corked that Sunday.

What staying awake tips have you got?
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

Coffee!!!

No warmth. Seriously, don't sit in front of an open fire, no electric blankets, nothing. Chilly as you cam stand without discomfort.

No lying down. Sit in a chair.

No booze.

No sex.

Of course, if you follow all these, you'll be awake, but will you be happy? Nope!

So true! Esp. the cold air. And certainly for us guys (maybe I should just speak for myself), sex is fraught with peril, cuz I can be unconscious mere minutes afterwards.

But who could resist sex on the solstice *and* the new moon? C'mon, that's some dynamic energy to throw into the mix. So maybe sex, then coffee.

Usually I can keep myself awake by nibbling periodically throughout the night and watching cat videos.

Uhm...chocolate and an episode of Hannibal is pretty good at keeping me up; I'd say keep something on that's somewhat noisy.

Peppy/angry music helps too.

I would have sworn we'd had threads like this prior to UAN regularly, but it looks like it only happened once before (and that was five years ago!) - I don't have enough brain left tonight to contribute anything more substantial than that to this thread tonight, but I can add that link!

Fie, Sunflower, fie! I was pretending we hadn't brainstormed on this before, to try to generate fresh thinking; now you've gone and made it easy. You're way too good at this moderator thing, you know. ;)

Nibbling, absolutely (*especially* chocolate! A bit of caffeine, a sugar rush, and hell, it's chocolate!)...but videos? I can't put the TV on during UAN after a certain hour. It has the complete opposite effect of helping me stay awake.

Probably obvious, but make sure you've got enough sleep the night before.  Maybe even take a nap sometime during the day.

I also find it immensely helpful to have something that I can focus on that is not repetitive. Last year I used music, MUX chat, and a video game where I was actually following the plot. (as opposed to something with long stretches of repetitve grinding. Unintentional trance is not the goal here ;) )

Depends on what's on for me.  In general though, some munchies and good company go a long way to helping stay awake in my opinion.  There's nothing better than a philisophical debate at 4am with a couple of  friends over nearly cold pizza...

I'm so excited to do this this year. I lurk more than I post but you guys are fun!

Anyway to stay up I will be drinking lots of coffee. Also the sound of my indoor horses (aka cats) can usually keep me awake so I'm going to buy them some new toys (aka solstice gifts) and when I get really tired toss them out and let the cats run wild.

Hmm, actually I think coffee first, then sex. Like a caffeine nap, but more exciting.

I can't stay up all night as I'll be visiting relatives, but as a former third shifter, I can offer a few tips: Have a real meal sometime in the middle of the night, not just snacks. Dinner at 2:00am will help trick you into thinking there are more hours to stay up. Exercise is helpful, some sun salutations or even just walking around helps. Also lights that are too bright can have a paradoxical effect and make you sleepy.

Naps before are a great idea, but try to match the duration to your sleep cycle. For me that's about 90 minutes, so I nap for that long, or three hours, or four and a half, etc. Waking up at the wrong point can make you feel more tired. If you don't know how long your sleep cycle is, you can use a two stage alarm like Gentle Alarm.

Have fun!
