Samhain
« on: October 30, 2011, 11:50:23 pm »
Just wondering what everyone is doing for Halloween or Samhain this year.
I wasn't planning anything, but decided I wanted to do a pagan ritual. I'm not real sure what to do for a ritual, so I don't think I can write one. Online all I've seen so far are Wiccan ones.

I don't identify as Wiccan at all. Just Pagan.

I won't be doing the normal costume celebration thing this year at all. When I was still working I would dress up for work and celebrate that way. But now with that gone I have no way to celebrate.

I feel like I'm the only one not doing anything for halloween. Sigh.

I don't consider myself Wiccan either, but I do celebrate Samhain (though I call it All Hallow's).  For me, it is two things: the celebration of the meat harvest, and also a holiday of mourning.  As for the meat harvest, since we're very low on money right now, we celebrate with a pot roast dinner; but in the future I'd like to purchase a free-range, organic animal from a local farmer and have it humanely slaughtered, and then spend the 31st helping to cut and freeze it.  This would not be something I would enjoy, necessarily, but I feel as if it's important to have a connection to the food that I consume.

The second part of the holiday, which I'd call the holiday of mourning, treats the day much like the Mexican holiday of Dia De Los Muertos.  My family spends some time at the cemetery, talking about our loved ones who have passed and telling stories that will help our children get a sense of who they were.  We leave seasonal flowers to honor them.  This is less a sad occasion then it is a repeating and remembering of family history.  I also make a personal visit to the place where my two children who I lost before they were born are buried - they are very important to me, but much less so to others, so I prefer to make the visit on my own; I am still very much in mourning.
