I'm not sure if this is quite what you're looking for because it explicitly is ABOUT Christianity and Paganism... but the song's called "" by Dar Williams. It's one of my favorites.

Depends on what kind of music you like, but here are a few of my favourites:

- '' by Kate Bush
- Tori Amo's album Midwinter Graces is a bit hit-and-miss, but I do like '' (which is explicitly pagan, even though she's more Gnostic Christian)
- '' by Vienna Teng
- '' by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
- '' as covered by Sohodolls, which I personally prefer to the Hanoi Rocks original
- '' as recited by Henry Rollins
- '' by the Pretenders (or one of the millions of covers if you're sick of the original)
- '' by Sufjan Stevens
- '' by the Raveonettes (not the one about chestnuts and open fires)
- George Winston's versions of '' and '' (which you might parse as muzak-y, but I've always loved them)
- '' and '' from the Muppet Christmas Carol

Also, his Sister Winter.  It breaks my heart.

And finally, some Murder City Devils (because fuck you, Holiday Season):

+1 for both of these.

My mom likes trans siberian orchestra for christmas, but most of their christmas albums are remakes of christmas songs, though a capella as far as I know.

Not actually holiday music but completely related to Christmas and has now become the song I listen to as "Christmas music". :p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_in_the_Name#2009_Christmas_number_one_campaign

Hrm.  I like the religious music.  It's pretty much the only thing keeping me from discarding Christmas personally.  However: while some of it's overplayed, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker isn't Christian though it's set during the Christmas season.

When we get to NewYear's, last year Murder by Death released a lovely version of Auld lang syne.

Some of them are already down, and lots aren't technically christmas season songs, but this thread got me to start building my own playlist (so far the ordering is just a draft, I'll get it done before I have to visit people)

Sleep Away - Bob Acri
Now Three - Vienna Teng
The Last Snowfall - Vienna Teng
The Atheist Christmas Carol - Vienna Teng
St Stephen's Cross - Vienna Teng
Lullaby for a Stormy Night - Vienna Teng
Linus and Lucy - Vince Guaraldi Trio
Metropolis - Pogues
Fairy Tale of New York - Pogues
Pidä kädestä - Indica
Through Heaven's Eyes - Prince of Egypt soundtrack
When You Believe - Prince of Egypt soundtrack
In Your Arms Tonight - Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Walking in the Air - Nightwish version (original from The Snowman, if you prefer it)
Take the A Train - Michael Maxwell and his Orchestra (Billy Strayhorn)
It Don't Mean a Thing (If it Ain't got that Swing) - Michael Maxwell and his Orchestra (Duke Ellington)

This is my more 'background holiday music' type playlist though. My 'actually paying attention to/singing along' playlist is Rupaul's Christmas album plus Fairy Tale of New York and several other wintery songs.

"Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night and (depending on your sense of humor) "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues.  Also, a friend recommended this album to me, Beautiful Darkness: Celebrating the Winter Solstice.  I haven't listened to it much, but it seems nice.
