First off, in response to everyone who's chimed in so far: YES! I knew the solstice falling on a Saturday would energize things for us. Looking forward to it.

It looks like it will be an interesting night.  I'll be here for at least part of it... longer if the weather turns bad.

For those who may not be aware, we have an annual tradition here at The Cauldron of celebrating the December solstice--the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere--by staying up all night (or *trying* to stay up all night...or just visiting for part of the night!)

We gather here electronically to shoot the breeze, in chat and in a dedicated thread just for that purpose, and pass the hours passing around all kinds of craziness (stories, recipes--the infamous chocolate mug cake!--photos, links we've found, and generally how the solstice adventure is progressing in our locale). We usually pick a non-theme around which to loosely organize the event. Last year, with the Mayan deadline looming, was a no-brainer: apocalypse now!

But we need a non-theme for this year! Keep in mind this isn't anything set in stone; the night of the solstice, people share whatever they want (it's called a non-theme for a reason). But still, it's nice to have a jumping off point. So...

...who's got a great idea for the non-theme for 2013's edition of Up All Night: A Technopagan Winter Solstice?

My own little personal theme is going to be changes. A lot of them will just be digital, but I'm really wanting to change themes, icons, and names on various websites I'm on to better reflect me (not here at TC!), and usually that's a big undertaking for myself. I'm also going to figure out a way to divine for myself if it's a good idea to undertake a blogging project I've been tempted to do for a while, but I'm unsure if it's a thing I SHOULD do. So, we'll see. :)

But yes, I will definitely be here all night, as always. :)

I love this! It sounds like fun! I like the theme of changes as well. I got married in June so I've been going through some.

Not sure what the theme should be, for me personally or for the night in general. But I'll be around. I intend to stay up all night just like I did last year.
I love a good metallurgical take on the phrase "What the F---?"

I like the idea of a personal theme.

I think mine shall be friendship. I've been having a rough time with various folks in my life recently and the night of the solstice I will be at a Yule party. Hopefully I'll have a working laptop so I can be in chat, too. The Yule party will be with friends of mine from the town I used to live in which I'm missing now because I feel utterly alone here. Especially since my close local friend just stabbed me in the back.

So I'm hoping to repair some of the damage on my soul this Yule via booze, song, and good times with friends. Actual friends.
Pray drunk. Hex sober.

I'm just going to put this here: Pumpkin Spice Mug Cake.

...I have a partial can of pumpkin puree in my fridge right now. Going to see how it works gluten free and dairy free if the grocery store has gluten free self rising flour tonight (I have a cousin and a good friend who both have celiac and dairy issues).

This will be a good year, too, since December 21 is a Saturday, giving folks all day Sunday to sleep off the all-nighter. So participation should be even greater than usual.

And I may actually manage to stay awake this year!

You can "make" self-rising flour by adding some baking powder to regular flour! I just Googled it, and the proportion I found worked fine.

I am so totally in for this. I think I only made it til 3 AM last year, but we'll see what I can do this year. :D

A ) SO excited for this!
B ) I am thanking EVERYTHING that it comes after my exams this term!
C ) The hot/cold non-theme is sounding pretty strong already. I was going to suggest a decorations theme, simply because it ties in with my plans for the sunrise. :p

I hadn't given it a thought, yet (still working through the breakup stuffs, so I'm more focused on the now and less on looking ahead), but now I'm really looking forward to it!

A personal theme is genius! Its a good way to reflect on yourself on a night about friends (if I've learned ANYTHING from my college experience so for it's "Always, always, always make time for yourself!").

I think mine will be writing, seeing as that is the best way I've found to put things in order for myself. :D:

So, just to make sure... we're doing the Up All Night on Saturday night, right? Not Friday? The solstice falls a little after 9 am here on the West Coast (USA) on Saturday the 21st, but that's still the shortest day of the year*.

I assume we're doing it Saturday. I hope we're doing it Saturday, because I requested Sunday off to sleep. :p

*It occurs to me that I live somewhat in Celtic time, where the day technically starts the night before... *facepalm*
