Yes, folks--with the holiday season looming, it's time to turn our thoughts to one of The Cauldron's lasting traditions--Up All Night (UAN): A Technopagan Solstice Celebration!

For those who may be new or unfamiliar, every year for the December solstice we here at The Cauldron hold a virtual, online, all-night party! It's in the forums, it's in chat, it's even in video...and in an era of COVID, when gathering in person is largely off the table anyway, UAN is perfectly suited as a way to mark the march of the seasons together.

Every year, UAN has a "non-theme"--a principle or idea that serves as a jumping-off point for thoughts and posts and further discussion, or that can be completely ignored so that you can share whatever you want (hence the "non" in non-theme). Considering that, by the estimation of nearly every living being on the planet, 2020 has been The Most Monstrous Non-Wartime Year in Modern History®, but with any luck things are looking up for 2021, the question I have for all of you is...

What should be UAN's non-theme this time around?
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I'll suggest the obvious:  Together Apart- how we're managing to come together in spite of the barriers presented by The Most Monstrous Non-Wartime Year in Modern History®

(And hoorah for UAN.  I have that entire week off, so I may make it past midnight this year.)

In the States, "Together Apart" is also a good description of our current political situation.

Probably influenced by my newest furry addition to the family, but Joy In Small Things.

Puppies are incredibly good at finding the joy in literally anything. Like a pinecone. Or a sock. Or wood that you can no longer bear to throw into the fireplace because he's having so much fun playing with it. And they're really good at ferreting out dangerous things to eat from small places in your house, and then taking joy in running away from you as you yell "waitaminutewhatsinyourmouthgetbackheredammit".

Anyway, I feel that's a good thing to hold to this year. Finding joy in the smallest of places or things. Like pinecones.

Also Sirius says he doesn't know what UAN is but his mummy is excited about it so he is too! WAG WAG WAG.

(He will definitely not last all night.)
Pray drunk. Hex sober.

Indeed. Politics was high on the list of barriers I had in mind for USians.

I've been waiting since last year to make this suggestion, it being 'the obvious one' had this not been a freakish hell year: vision (as in, 20/20 vision). Lots of different directions that could take, though 'vision for the future' stands out given the circumstances.

I like both Aisling's and Morag's suggestions, too, though.

I second this (I was going to suggest 'coping mechanisms' but this is much more positive.)

Joy In Small Things.

Shit, my wife learned this years ago.

Seriously though, I like this idea. Amidst all the horseshit and upheaval, we can/should still remember the small things. For me, being in human services means I still have a job, I finished a novel, and we found a litter of kittens in the back yard (the kids have named them all). Stuff I might otherwise take for granted, but in the right perspective, it's really pretty grand.
You have my sword
And my shield
And my... um... slacks.

I feel like vision and joy in small things could perhaps be combined, because sometimes some of us (me included) need reminding how to see the joyful small things, if that makes sense.

The people have spoken! The non-theme for UAN 2020 will be:

Seeing The Joy in Small Things

***I strongly encourage folks to post photos and videos this year*** to focus on the "Seeing" (Vision 2020) aspect of the phrase; let's make UAN especially visual!

I like this! I apologize in advance if I end up spamming the UAN thread with lots of photos from my hikes and maybe whatever else finds its way onto the memory card.
I love a good metallurgical take on the phrase "What the F---?"

Anything that thematically relevant can't possibly be spam.
