A Cauldron Tradition Is Coming...Let's Brainstorm!
« on: October 11, 2019, 10:57:22 pm »
Every year for over a decade now, we here at The Cauldron have had an online party on the December solstice (winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, summer solstice in the southern). "Up All Night" is a once-a-year, come-one-come-all, truly global all-night event that is open to any Cauldron member...and of course, since Cauldron membership is free and easy, that means anybody can participate, once they become a member!

What does it involve? That's up to all of us to decide, which is why I'm launching this thread well in advance of Saturday, December 21 (and yes, UAN falls on a Saturday night this year, which means participation should be quite robust, since many folks can sleep it off the next day). Let's kick around ideas for how we can add to the fun this year. Here's some of what typically transpires during the night:

--A special dedicated thread in this forum, where folks can touch base, share their experiences, and write just about any damn thing (within forum guidelines, of course), from recipes that keep them fed through the night, to music for the solstice, photos of the sunset where they are...you name it.

We choose a non-theme every year--a very loose idea that folks can hang posts on, or completely ignore (hence the "non" part). Last year's non-theme was "Rise and Shine."

For this year's non-theme, what should we choose that's broadly relevant and topical and could stimulate all kinds of conversation?

--Chat! And lots of it. It's typically the best chat night of the year, because so many people are on simultaneously. So if you haven't discovered our Discord board, don't wait until UAN to try it--do a test run now in the weeks running up to UAN, so you're familiar with it beforehand.

--The Great Global Group Meditation: Cauldronites from around the world "gather" in a Zoom meeting for a nondenominational, professionally guided meditation session. Feel the calming connection crisscross the planet...but don't fall asleep!

That's just some of what's possible. So how about it, folks? What would you like to see happen for UAN 2019?
The first song sets the wheel in motion / The second is a song of love / The third song tells of Her devotion / The fourth cries joy from the sky above
The fifth song binds our fate to silence / and bids us live each moment well / The sixth unleashes rage and violence / The seventh song has truth to tell
The last song echoes through the ages / to ask its question all night long / And close the circle on these pages / These, the metamythos songs

I'd like to suggest 'Responsibility' as it certainly feels like something relevant to now both in the UK and worldwide, however it is a bit of a heavy topic for a more light hearted event.

I think 'Transformation' would be a good topic for this year. There's a lot going on in the world right now, my own life and others included. What I like about this topic is that it can be general enough to fit for a non-theme while still being able to drill down into more personal or random topics. Just my two cents!

You've come up with a great idea for a theme in this sentence.

Definitely going to say that doing this for my - is it third year now Altair? - it's a lot of fun, and so totally worth it to see/talk with everyone across the globe as they check in and celebrate the shortest day/longest night of the year.

As for ideas for this year's theme (or non-theme): I definitely like the ideas of transformation, connections, and change... We could also do reflections on our actions as Pagans.

As others have said, the non-theme of "Connection" is appealing. Perhaps connection as a way to adapt to change?

One thing I'd like to see is better promotion - there was an initial discussion about that last year (see also the thread linked in the OP of that thread, in which the UAN-related discussion begins to develop on the first page), but it kinda fell off people's radar.

A lot of it is about promotion in meatlife venues, which is a fine thing but it might already be a bit late to do very much with prior to this year's UAN (it's not, though, too early to start preparing to apply it to UAN 2020; there's enough logistics involved to need a fair bit of lead time); I'd like to also see better tools for online promotion - I've already, in response to your PM to me, given you the green light on contacting The Wild Hunt to see if they'll give us a plug; I'd love to hear Cauldronites' suggestions about other places for plugs, and other online promo ideas.

Amending this to say that if you have no desire to administer a (another) domain, I'm willing to continue to work with it if it can be a team effort. Say if we start on 2020's campaign a month or so into the new year, have several people contribute bits and pieces, and be prepared to roll it out with plenty of lead time before the event...say the June solstice?

Non-theme announcement by end of day today...

...and is it OK for me to start getting excited now?? UAN is less than a week away! (this Saturday!)

Non-theme announcement by end of day today...

By popular consensus, this year's UAN "non-theme" is [drumroll]...

Connections

I'm sure everyone is totally shocked! ;)

But how will the non-theme be expressed in folks' posts and chatter? Better yet, what are some things we can set out to do that night to create some kind of connection? (and then, of course, report back here to The Cauldron about how it went!)

Completely shocked, did not see that theme coming.   ;)

There's an icebreaker called "So do I!" that I've used for groups that might be fun for UAN if I can translate it into a workable thread.  The whole point is to connect with other people in a group by finding shared experiences and interests.

In a quick nutshell, one person starts by stating a fact about themselves.  If anyone else in the group shares that fact, they say "So do I!" and then give a fact about themselves.  This keeps going until everyone has made a connection with at least one other person.  If someone gives a fact that no one else shares the next person in line tries to come up with a related fact about themselves.

I see it working similar to the Forum Ban Game and Pagan Word Association threads - of course there's a chance of people posting at the same time as one another (especially at a busy time like UAN night), and not entirely sure how that could be gotten around.

Another option, there could perhaps be an element of alphabet tag, so following the first post someone whose forum name begins with the next letter of the alphabet has to either respond or post a new, related fact and so on through the alphabet  (however many times)...  if you see what I mean...?

I *love* this idea, Aisling! I thoroughly encourage you to start a "So do I!" thread for UAN.
