The Cult of Isis and Early Christianity

I am still chewing on the content, but I thought this might be of interest to some folks here.

The paper starts out with a quick synopsis of both of the Isiac and Christian cults' place in the Greco-Roman world before discussing the similarities between the religions and why Christianity, in the end, came out as the official religion of the state.

There is something about the "tone" of the writing I don't like, but I can't really put my finger on it. Anyway, hope it's a good read.

Interesting indeed, though I'm appalled that Wikipedia was accepted as a source for a final research paper in a 400 level class.

What I found most interesting is the theory that Christianity gained its strength from its female followers.

Just finished the article! It was certainly interesting. Lots of information about a topic I knew little about.

I'm not sure about the tone, but I think it was a little awkward at times (for example: "He thought that the pagan cults were good because they did not go out and coerce others to join their religion..." is full of unneeded words and seems to stop and start). Such wordings make it difficult to follow the idea of a sentence. I also felt the use of Wikipedia as a cited source was inappropriate. Don't get me wrong, I love Wikipedia, but in a university publication called "a journal of academic writing" the least you can do is use all academic sources!

Overall very good. I'll probably re-read it tomorrow when I'm more awake xD

You know, I never thought of it. I remember my first year of college my professors were very anti-Wikipedia, but during a class I took for fun about a year and a half ago the professor was fine with it; something about the standards for articles being a lot more stringent these days.

This was for Middle Eastern studies however so maybe she just didn't have high expectations from a class of students who were mainly taking it as a "filler course" for their electives.

This is actually heavily supported, and especially so in the last few decades as women seeking reform in modern churches look to ancient precedents.

Its role among the poor was also a major factor.

My PhD includes some biblical studies and early church history, and I get to listen to a lot of people talking about things like this. It's always fascinating!

I'm still working out how Isis relates to my veneration of Mary (which I still do - she asked for a place on my altar).
