Technically, they didn't. But in my signature I referred to myself with the four names, to make a point.
Yeah, as mentioned in the other thread about Religio Romana...the fetishization of the Late Republic can be a bit much.

I myself prefer the late Empire over either the Republic or early Empire.

I suppose the Republic has a certain political appeal to many people, but I separate my theistic inclinations from my political ones. The Religio of the Republican period seems quite dry and lifeless to me.

The late Empire, after mystery cults, Christianity, and Neoplatonism had all risen up to challenge the official religion, on the other hand, was quite an interesting time. It is from that period when you can find some quite rousing and passionate personal accounts of devout pagans standing up for their beliefs.
"The worshippers of the gods go to them; to the manes go the ancestor-worshippers; to the Deities who preside over the elements go their worshippers; My devotees come to Me." ... "Whichever devotee desires to adore whatever such Deity with faith, in all such votaries I make that particular faith unshakable. Endowed with that faith, a votary performs the worship of that particular deity and obtains the fruits thereof, these being granted by Me alone." - Sri Krishna

I take inspiration from the "high point" of the Empire, from Trajan to Marcus Aurelius; I honor those men specifically when I do pay homage of the spirits of deceased Roman Emperors. Though I still take into account all the things that happened after, we do live in modern times after all; as I've said before, one of the primary inspirations for me to take on a Roman path is because my country deliberately patterned itself off Ancient Rome.

Same country. I do admire the Roman Republic, I just don't admire it's *spirituality* so much as it's government and secular values.
