What's in your First Aid Kit?
« on: June 04, 2012, 11:15:54 am »
We were talking a bit in chat about first aid kits and I decided to start a thread to see how other people do theirs.  So, how big is your first aid kit and what's in it?

Mine is a 2-gallon Rubbermaid bin and contains the following (in varying quantities):

  • Band-Aids (various sizes)
  • Gauze bandages
  • Gauze pads
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Wound repair ointment
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Disinfecting wash
  • cotton balls
  • Ace bandages
  • Activated charcoal
  • Bismuth tablets
  • Cold packs
  • Heat packs
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • tongue depressors (for minor splinting)
  • Small bottle of acetaminophen
  • Small bottle of aspirin
  • Muscle rub (we use Icy Hot)
  • tweezers
  • first aid tape
  • scissors

Where did you get the activated charcoal? I need to get some.

My first aid kit lives in my car for search and rescue. It's a 5 gallon rubbermaid container with two Plano tackle kits inside. I also have a smaller one (1-2 person kit you can buy premaid + a freezer bag full of extras) that lives in my field pack.

  • gauze pads
  • gauze rolls
  • vet wrap
  • ace bandage
  • cotton pads
  • cotton balls
  • tampons
  • maxi pads - can absorb a lot of blood!
  • ibuprofen
  • various painkillers
  • benadryl
  • sunscreen
  • bug spray
  • hand sanitizer
  • latex gloves
  • tweezers
  • thermometer
  • petroleum jelly
  • cough drops
  • vapor rub
  • toothbrush - for cleaning wounds
  • saline - for rinsing wounds or eyes
  • 70% alcohol
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • liquid bandage
  • various size band-aids
  • q-tips
  • styptic powder
  • large trash bags
  • saran wrap - for covering dressings against water
  • emergency blanket
  • sandwich and snack bags
  • ribbon - for muzzling dogs
  • scissors
  • water purifying drops
  • waterproof matches

I'm sure I'm forgetting something. :ange:

I don't have any splinting devices, since we are out in the field I would just use tree branches, since I always carry a knife. Although I should get some tongue depressors for fingers. If you are at home you can use wooden spoons, rolled up magazines or newspapers, an umbrella...

One thing that I have found essential to my first aid kit is blister prevention/treatment. Moleskin, antibiotic, needle to sterilize and puncture, even those Dr. Scholl's gel packs.

If you're a hiker, you'll know why this stuff needs to live in your pack, and taken whenever and wherever the heck you go. Blisters can literally stop you in your tracks.

Mine is tiny! It consists of:
  • Plasters and tape to stick them down with as I always find they fall off quickly otherwise
  • Absorbent pad things for big wounds
  • Bandages
  • Scissors
  • Antiseptic wipes, sometimes. Otherwise water in a squeezy bottle because that washes things out fairly well.
  • Antihistamine cream.

I'm sure I'd be much better prepared for a real emergency if I had loads of other things, but that collection has served me well enough in every situation I've encountered so far.

I buy mine in gelatin caps.  It's in the supplement section of my local grocery store.  Places like Super Supplements have them, too.

Mine is in gelatin caps also and I get it at our local health food store.

To everyone - I'm getting new ideas of what to add to my kit and now I think I need a bigger bin!

Super glue is good for gluing wounds closed when that is the best option.

We have a largish commercial kit we take with us to events so we can share without handing someone an open container - it has individual use packets of things like antiseptic.  At home we have aton of stuff - though when we ran out of betadyne the SO used the iodine solution I use for sanitizing my brewing equipment to replace it.
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

I don't really have a kit.  I keep band-aids and adhesive moleskin pads all over the place because I walk long distances and am prone to blisters, and I keep a number of first supplies in my bathroom (including band-aids, gauze bandages, paper tape).  I tend to make a lot of remedies myself.  Plantain salve is a mainstay, as it works on just about every kind of minor skin wound or burn.  I store that in the fridge.

We have a snap-closure chocolate tin in the kitchen and a zip-up pouch in the bathroom. Some things can come out of one and end up in the other, others have duplicates in both. Generally, oral medication lives in the kitchen, since the bathroom water is not drinkable.

As far as I know, the lot we have includes:

- Savlon spray (disinfectant)
- Band-aids
- Gauze pads
- Paracetamol tablets
- Paracetamol infant suspension
- Ibuprofen tablets
- Cold and flu tablets
- Hayfever tablets
- Cough linctus
- Ear thermometer
- Lavender oil
- Tea tree oil
- Arnica gel
- Hydrocortisone ointment

I have all the above with the exception of child paracetamiol suspension (no children in my life at the moment I'm sad to say...)
and the addition of...
Factor 50 sun protection cream, I'm allergic to too much sun exposure...
clove oil, for tooth pain until I can get to the dentist
Co-Codomol tablets (Paracetamol and Codeine) for when any pain isn't helped by Ibuprofen alone...
aqueous calamine cream (for calming sunburn and taking down heat rash - it doesn't leave chalky residues on the skin like the non-aqueous kind)
support bandages for sprained ankles and wrists (something I am unfortunately prone to - legacy of a dancing-classes fixated childhood)
a product called 4Head.. a stick of menthol for rubbing on your temples to relieve headache, it's cooling, lifting effect can work wonders...
a product called Calmex lip balm because my lips are prone to getting cracked and dry
a product called Lotil cream, for my shins which are prone to getting dry and cracking...

plus I like to draw on "natural remedies" for things like Irritable Bowel Syndrome by eating fibre rich cereals, apples with their skins still on, jacket and new potatoes with their skins still on, shredded raw cabbage (coleslaw) rather than to go down the prescription drugs route...
It\'s all about the Ebb and Flow...

Try the aquarium section of pet supply stores.

Try the fabric backed bandages, they leave far more residue when you remove them, but they stay put.

This one is just a general warning, and not necessarily tied to this post.

The trauma kits that contain Celox are great for massive bleeding like a gunshot wound etc. They are fine in general kits that you would use now. In a meltdown situation, you should avoid the use of Celox, because it requires medical attention. I would think that anything bad enough to need Celox would require medical attention, but in an end of civilization as we know it, or a natural disaster where help may be days away, Celox should be a last resort. My understanding is that the artificial clot that Celox forms has to be removed for natural healing to take place.
