Does anyone else suffer with tinnitus?

What, if anything, have you found which helps with it?  Home remedies, methods of learning to live with it and just general ranting &/or commiseration - all are welcomed in this thread.

Mine is usually best described as a high pitched continual whistling (though early this morning something weird happened and for about 30 seconds it was like listening to the clanging of a church bell or something - so if anyone has anything to say about that, I'd be most interested too).

I've had Tinnitus off and on for most of my adult life (it doesn't usually mean hearing loss, but for me it did).  I tried everything I could think of but the only thing that seemed to give me relief is having other "noise" on in the room, i.e. the TV, radio, A/C unit, anything.  And maybe it just took my mind off of it, but it was still relief, so yay!

Now it's different.  My hearing aids make my ears super itchy, but when I have them in, the tinnitus stops.  I'd rather have the itch over the ringing any day!!

Yes! I developed terrible tinnitus as a result of going off prescribed Xanax. It was brutal, kept me up and night, etc. Ringing and “static/electrical zapping” in the brain. I thought it would never get better.

I took a supplement that was supposed to help with tinnitus called Lipo-flavonoid. It actually really helped. I recommend trying it.

Yes!

NOTHING! *high-pitched, too-manic laugh*

It's a high-pitched ringing that sounds like cells are dying in my head. Worst part about it is that I already get sensory overload from environmental noises (traffic, work being done, etc) so the obvious solution would be ear plugs...except with ear plugs all I can hear is the tinnitus and it drives me to insanity in about 1 minute flat.

Made it hard to sleep next to Mr. Morag when we were first together because his snoring, dear gods.

It comes and goes in severity; mostly it's just sort of there and I can only really notice it when things get quiet, but every so often it'll rise to a crescendo and that's all I can hear in whatever ear it decided to target (I have it in both).

I find white noise is what helps me ignore it best. At some point I'll ask my doctor about hearing aids to help manage it but I'm not quite at that point yet.

My values of home remedy are not everyone's values of home remedy because the Celt is an acupuncturist but, weirdly, getting stabbed in the knees cleared up my tinnitus for a bit. It comes and goes depending on other underlying health shit so my long-term solution is "try to do something about the other underlying health shit".

Thank you Morag, YES!  I can't believe I didn't think of it before, but you are so right!  White noise does help, and there are machines called "sound conditioners" that are lightweight, portable, and give you the white noise.  My friend bought hers at the Canadian Hearing Society for about $120.

I know you like the MyNoise tools - the web app has some sounds designed to help with tinnunitis (which I don't generally have, so I haven't tested them, but it's basically white noise frequencies chosen for the purpose. There are multiple options.)

Thanks, a little belatedly, to all who posted in this thread - I'd say it's good to know I'm not alone (misery loves company!) but it's not good that there are so many fellow sufferers.

It is good to have a few new suggestions as to what might help.  I do indeed like the MyNoise tools, and I shall check out the ones for tinnitus in particular.

I've not heard of "sound conditioners" before - a quick web search brought back lots of different white noise machines at varying price ranges.

I must confess, latterly I've been listening to 'meditation' tracks on YouTube while I go to sleep (it's the only thing which seems effectively to combat my insomnia lately!), and those have the added benefit of masking the tinnitus really quite well, too.
