Restless Legs
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:36:26 am »
I am at my wits end with this. I believe i have restless leg syndrome. My mother has it and on rare occasion my sister has it. I asked my doctor what to do about it because o can't sleep at night due to the overwhelming urge to flex and overwhelming my legs around at night. If i try not to move at all my legs will twitch involuntarily. I am losing sleep and it is awful. When i talked tp my doc he looked at me blankly and didn't help at all. He just said tp not drink alcohol. Which i pretty much don't anyway. If anyone knows anything that can help i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Nicole

My husband has this. It keeps BOTH of us up some nights. I get tired of being kicked, I move, he wakes himself up . . . endless variations on a theme.

There ARE meds for the condition. (He can't take them due to extenuating circumstances.) I'd suggest finding a different doc, if the one you usually go to isn't willing to at least consider that possibility. (I can't recall the name at present, but I'd wager that Google-fu would produce some answers.)

Good luck with this.

My father-in-law took something called gabapentin (I think) which seemed to help. You might ask your doctor about it.

That's what I take and it works pretty well for me.

I don't know how active you are, but I have trouble with restless leg syndrome sometimes when I am particularly inactive (if I spend most of the day on the computer).  I find that doing exercise during the day on a regular basis helps a lot.

I suggest seeing a sleep specialist; RLS is a sleep disorder.  If you send me a PM with your location, I can recommend one or two I've worked with in the past.

So i will  ask my doctor about that medicine. I am allergic to a lot of medications so I've got to be careful. And it strikes when I've also not been that active during the day. Also if i am too tired it will happen too. I used to be up at 3 am taking a hot bath bc i found that technique on Google. It doesn't work for long anymore. Now i get up and run up and down the stairs on my apartment building. That doesn't help too much with the sleep deprivation but it helps me get back to sleep faster. Thank you all for your suggestions

Another suggestion: massage and hamstring stretches.

They've helped me. Randall rubs my calves before bed each night, and if the problem occurs during the day (usually evening), he'll tackle it early. Sometimes I end up having to go back over the calves with a deeper massage. Hamstring stretches can help if your foot is involuntarily flexing as well.

And find another doctor. Seriously. Gabapentin is an ideal drug for this, and your doctor's advice was pretty rotten. Some attempt to address the problem beyond what he did would be pretty much expected...even an internist should know about this medication because it does has a number of uses.

Thank you all for the advice. My girlfriend tried to massage my legs and usually i can't keep them still long enough for anything to help. That's the only problem with massage. Well give it another go though.

Reviving this old thread because it seems I may have found something which helps with night-time restless legs, which may be helpful to others.  I take a high strength vitamin D supplement, which I now take last thing at night with a small glass of milk (the milk is because vit D is fat soluble).  This seems to help prevent the RLS from keeping me awake at night.

I want to experiment with taking 1/2 the tablet earlier in the day with food and then 1/2 at bedtime, as I also get RLS in the evenings frequently.  Keeping my hands busy -with crafting- can prevent an attack from occurring, so I generally craft while we're watching TV, visiting with people etc.  But as soon as my hands or my back get tired and I put the crafting down, the RLS will generally kick in almost immediately.  I'll report back once again if I find that the 1/2 a tablet helps with this scenario.

(I'm reluctant to take medications besides supplements, for reasons which I now can't recall - possibly side-effects, or something.)

I too have RLS which got worse when I went on Adderall. Vitamins have helped me as well, though I can't be certain which ones. I began taking a regular multivitamin and a sub-lingual B complex daily and saw symptoms lessen after a week or two.

Glad to see you found relief, Perdita! Restless legs majorly suck.
