I've always wanted to know what do CR's put on their altar. Celtic Recon's, if I'm confusing anyone. I know the use of statues didn't hit Ireland, like it did in England because the Roman's never conquered them. So I would really like to know the answer to that question. Thanks, everyone.

I'm not exactly CR, although I'm strongly informed by that philosophy. I don't personally like images of deities, for the reasons you mention. Outdoor altars and worship at the hearth fire are probably the closest we can get to what our ancestors did (although we can't be sure, as with almost everything to do with CR). A lot of CRs make offerings out in natural spaces, rather than at altars, from what I understand - I do some of this. I'd like a hearth altar, but I need a house with a hearth first! In an attempt to echo the 'central hearth' idea, I have a lantern that I keep lit as an imitation hearth fire, plus candles for each deity, and offerings from the natural world including feathers, stones, salt etc (depending on whose shrine-area it is).

If you want more detailed information, searching for 'shrine' or 'altar' at Gaol Naofa will help you find ideas on offerings and where people tend to offer them. There's also the page on ritual from the CR FAQ, and the page on Tairis on daily offerings is great.

Thanks Sophia. I go into a bit about the kind of things I have on my shrine here as well, though I couldn't claim it's representative of a typical CR shrine, just typical of me :p

I'm not sure there's much on Gaol Naofa about shrines just yet, but I know there are plans to remedy that in future. In general, like you say a lot of folks tend to have spaces somewhere outside that forms a focus, and I've got one in my garden in addition to a space in doors.

For me, I've a few stones, crow feathers and seashells on mine-to represent earth sea and sky.  There's also a couple candles and offering bowl, small cast iron cauldron and a few other bits and pieces Morrigan wanted there.

For statues, I've had a couple for Brighid for hers, but they always seem to get broken with the help of my cats.  THe one I have of Morrigan has a beakless raven on her shoulder due to an unfortunate fall too (with the help of 'someone').  It goes to show how things get taken when not intentioned to be there!

I've actually already posted a pretty thorough description in a thread on a different board.

Pre-roman cultures of the British Isles not using idols is a common stereotype. The statuary was made out of wood, and only a few have survived-they were also designed for outdoor shrines, apparently, based on the size.

Personally, I have an icon of Brigantia at the moment. Thinking about adding a hunting god, Alator, maybe. His name has been sticking in my head lately.

My altar consists of a flat rock I found and antlers gifted to me by the gods.  That is my indoor altar, anyway.  Offerings go on the rock.
