Daily Practices
« on: October 27, 2013, 06:15:09 pm »
hello,

One thing I want to do more of that I haven't done much of is daily practices; a number of excuses I have, busy with school being the main one. However I do want to put more energy into this. So I am looking to see what others do for their practices, to get ideas and inspiration.

So, I am wondering what sort of things others do for daily practices?

Well, in Roman Britain there was the cult of the lar, a house spirit, who received an offering at every meal, if I remember correctly. Making daily sacrifices seems to be a widespread Indo-European practice, though, both Persians and Indians had five daily sacrifices, to various beings.

Hello herkles,

I can certainly understand where you are coming from in this. I myself have trouble finding the time to get everything done, much less have time for extensive daily practices. One thing I do is each night, as a part of getting ready for bed, I will light a candle and commune with the god/dess, honoring him/her as relevant to the time of the year in my practices. Sometimes as I lay down, I spend a short time in Astral Projection. I hope this helps give you a little inspiration. :)

Well, I don't do anything every day. But I have a devotional to my Patron on the fridge, and I read it aloud or under my breath whenever it catches my eye. I also try to end each night with meditation or practice in my Inner Sanctum, though I've been slipping lately.

Have you read Erynn Rowan Laurie's Circle of Stones? It has some really useful meditations, and making your own circle is a really relaxing and contemplative experience.

I don't think a daily practice has to be complicated or even time consuming.

My normal daily routine includes lighting my oil lamp and tending Brighid's flame (I do this every night without fail, even if only for a little while before bed),  making offerings (could be basic offerings of a small candle and some clear water, or could be more involved, depending on what I have available and if there's any special purpose for the offering), and praying. I also try to do some spiritual reading every day.

This routine can be pretty quick, if necessary, but also allows flexibility for adding to it and/or spending more time on parts of it, as needed.

Like Aster, my daily rituals are very simple (unless I'm doing a larger rite for a high day). I make morning offerings and say evening prayers, while lighting candles at my shrine to my household gods. I also give regular offerings to the land spirits around my house. That's about it, except for meditation/visualisation, divination, working out in the land, or other additional things that aren't quite daily practices.

Have you explored the material at Gaol Naofa? http://www.gaolnaofa.com/rituals/ The Tairis website also has some excellent material on making offerings and daily practices.

I haven't started anything yet, but once I start my Year and a Day on New Years Day, I plan to do daily devotionals every day and night.

As of right now my daily practices are based of the morning and night devotions from Gaol Naofa which I've adapted in a way I think suits me better(adding prayers ect... ) I try to do one upon rising and the other before I go to bed
